The harmonic balancer is "keyed" to the end of the crankshaft and will hold and keep it from turning without the bolt.

I decided against the piston stop and went with the rope trick. Unfortunately, I cannot get the broken part to move with just a vice grip on the extractor. This is where I am now.

A large and long adjustable wrench originally sold by the Crescent Tool Company of Jamestown, New York.

I might consider the "seized-fastener removal" sort of technique. Those tools (say, from Lisle or Thexton) use an air hammer to keep up a steady fast drumbeat tapping right on the end of the fastener (or your extractor) lengthwise, while you meanwhile keep a steady, not excessive, twisting force on it with a wrench, and it may just slowly buzz right around. They work wonders.

You'll notice that's quite different from a common impact wrench, which turns the air power right into giant blows of torque. I would avoid subjecting the extractor to that.

Does the balancer pulley still fit "snugly" on the end of the crankshaft? If the pulley can be rocked or tilted at all (ie, there is wear on the crankshaft snout), then I would consider engine replacement. Trying to extract a (bottomed out/seized) bolt fragment is really tough. If the crank is worn at all then the pulley will likely move & loosen no matter what you do.

    Just my 2 cents.

Did you get the broken crankshaft bolt out? What method worked?

I ended up paying a mechanic to machine out the bolt. After removing the broken bolt, the existing pully and belts were reinstalled. I have since driven about 2k miles with no problem. The cost was 285.00 but I am sure he just did a similar extraction method as to what was recommended here. I paid for the experience, not the labor. My Engine was 300.00 and the broken bolt was 285!
