Do you know of any way that this can be done without a mini-VCI? chicken-dance style?

I know it's been 3 years since you posted this, but do you still remember how to clear the old FOBS manually? I don't want to buy and mess with a mini-VCI, but I'm getting the "too many keys" sequence whenever I try to pair a new key. I could really use some help.

Thanks for the tip! I'm proficient with tech, but I don't know anything with messing with the car's OBDII port/codes.
Which one did you buy? I found a listing on Amazon called "GXG-1987 Mini VCI Car OBD Diagnostic Scanner" (sorry, can't post the link because I'm a new forum member).

Is there a guide to follow in terms of deleting the old keys?

Shannan, I literally just figured it out after FOUR hours of research. I had the exact same problem as you and found the solution that rathore4u was referencing.

You need to delete the previous keys from the system. After doing so, you'll be able to do the "Chicken Dance" just fine. I'm pretty stoked because I had begun to call dealers/locksmiths for programming price quotes (they wanted $135-170).

The instructions are found in a Word document posted in one of the Priuschat threads.

    Google Prius "Delete Mode"

Simply insert the master key 6x (leave it in at the 6th time), open/close your door 7x, and then quickly remove the key. That should delete all keys except the master. Good luck!

hey guys, let me share my story ^_^
2 days ago i got an used 2008 toyota prius without sks.
It came only with a silver logo keyfob and of course the remote lock/unlock buttons do not work.

Today I got the right keyfob with a black logo. At first i tried programming the keyhole to turn my car on, but failed it gave me 2-3 code (2 red blinks and then 3 blinks). I know what does it mean, there are too many keys registered so I could not add more.

After then I tried to program remote function and YES it works!!!
Now I got 2 keys, the one which unlocks doors and another which starts the engine.

The question is: what if i take the microchip from the silverlogo keyfob and replace it in the black logo keyfob, will it work?
    Thank you ^_^

I have a 2004 Toyota Prius and first bought a used smart key . Could use it to start and stop car by programming but smart key unlock and lock could not program. Big mistake for me. I then read to have a smart key function to work FOB must be a new one from Toyota. I was able to buy a new Smart Key from Toyota of Miami Florida for a $145.00 shipped to my door. It worked with procedure above first time. Thanks for the great Post.

To answer an old question, Yes that should work.
I was having almost the same problem when I bought my non-SKS base 2004, when I tried to add my eBay keys I would get the 2-3 code. My solution: got a mini-VCI, cleared all keys, and then programmed the original plus two from eBay. :)

Thanks for this! #13 was the info I needed to finally successfully program a fob purchased from ebay. I also couldn't get the timing right, but your instructions were right on target.

I bought a 2006 at an impound auction with no keys, but just got it started with an eBay smart key/fob in the slot after using a $12 Chinese "Toyota Smart Key Maker" that I bought on a whim. It came with no instructions so I was trying the Lexus instructions I found online since they talked about the power button. They did not work as published, but at some point I put the fob in the slot and got the security light to come on solid. I stopped for about 15 minutes and let it chirp to it's hearts content about the "wrong" key while it timed out. When I unplugged and replugged the OBD II port and pressed the power button the radio came on and the wipers cycled. From there i was able to press the brake and start it them move forward and backwards in the driveway. Surprised the heck out of me. Brakes are shot so it needs work. Still waiting for the state paperwork from the auction so I can get the title. Not wanting to spend much until that is dealt with.

But $12 for a whim/toy certainly paid off for me.

At the risk of reviving an old thread, thanks for your instructions @amethystjw.

It took less than five minutes to work through all the steps, and now my €50 junkyard (non-SKS) key starts the car and locks/unlocks the doors.

    Much appreciated!

I just got a new spare key but not sure if is SKS or non-SKS (I am a proud owner of a 2005 Prius with 1 SKS key) I was going to local locksmith with tech tool to connect via OBD2 and he tried to connect using European option but it didn't work then trying with USA it managed to connect but didn't allow to add key (both were 433MHz and car was imported from France to Poland without knowledge of its earlier life history)
Fast track to the point »»»» we ended up doing the chicken dance to program the key, managed to add the transponder (starting and stopping the car) but no luck with adding the new key to open and close the doors.

I (as proud Portuguese) decided to experiment the chicken dance with the NEW KEY (open door » 2x times insert/remove key » 2x close/open door » insert/remove key » 2x close/open door » insert key » close door » start button » start button » start (turn off) button » car responded with lock unlock. all of this was done with new key.
both keys kinda worked but appeared to be strangely working something like: the new key closed and can open it but the second/old key could also open it, then I closed it with the old key and the new key couldn't open it then I opened with metallic key, started the car with new key and then closed it and appears to be working with by button from new key. I haven't completely tested it and I had the Smart key active and both keys with me...
I only intent to use one key at a time so having just one key working at a time is fine but I am a bit afraid that this is in some kind of weird loop and the car someday will just stop and block itself in some state for fear of being using an invalid key - robbery attempt... Should I be worried or can sleep relaxed?

    anyone tried such approach?
I was reading half entire thread but might have missed a few posts, from the https://priuschat.com/attachments/prius_smartkey_programming-doc.5401/ refered by enthusiastdre I suspect I used the mode NEW MODE, but I was definitely surprised it rather worked !!!

I know I will earn the golden shovel award from digging the oldest posts back to life, but toyota does such great cars that they simply continue on & on :)

    Thanks,
    Paulo

    Hi!
I own a 2016 C one, no SKS or goodies like that. I use the regular metal key to start the car as it's the only way. Still, I lost the ability to open/close the doors with the remote that's built into the key. I tried my second key that was stored without a battery to prevent the battery leaking and corroding it. Installed new batteries on both of the keys and still nothing. I'm wondering if there's a "Chicken dance" for the non sks models like mine. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'd like a 2nd SKS key for a recently acquired 2006 Prius. Notwithstanding all the discussion here about SKS, in particular the fact that the vehicle is programmed to the fob and not vice versa, I've seen a new Amazon ad (Date first available: 20 Nov 2022) that specifies that it is only for the silver logo version (which I understand is the SKS). Is it possible that this is a new after market SKS?
I can't post a link as I've only posted once before. Searching the ad title finds it: "Smart Keyless Entry Remote Compatible with 2004-2009 Toyota Prius for Silver Logo FCC ID:MOZB31EG"
