Coolant Temperature Hack. Better MPGs!

    do you now how many Nox is produced when you burn that 0.8 in a bad way ( more ) and what you produce when burning 1 gallon in the normal way? ( less )
    i think you need to burn only 0,25 or 0,5 a bad way to come close to the 1 gallon of normal burn looking at exhausted stuff like nOx etc etc

    I personally applaud jtcsd, Bob Wilson, The Force, ccdise, Ken@Japan and many others who are pursuing innovation. In my book, they are heroes with enough courage to continue their quest to make all of our lives better despite the naysayers trying to berate them for their work. I hope this post will embolden them to continue their projects and keep all of us informed of the progress.

    I have a very short commute to work, less than 10minutes. I was bothered with the low MPGs, sometimes down to 36MPG for the tank. That initial warm-up cycle was the issue. Thanks to Bobwho and others, my MPG is above 50 even for <10min commute =). I just applied this hack. I am still experimenting with the resistor pot, gradually reducing the resistance to reduce warm-up cycle. The engine still does go through it at least for 10seconds, sometimes it feels like the engine stalls right away. No big deal. I am positive my average MPG will be higher than 50 for the tank.

    Are other folks using this trick? and does it seem safe with the passage of time? Any downside, I presume more emissions.

    since 2011 without any problems.

    Under rare conditions (several very short trips in the morning in one occasion) the way-too-smart Prius would think something is broken since it expects the temperature to change but does not "see" it due to the spoofing. If that happens then the logged DTC can be easily cleared.

    I'm using improved CCDISCE's temp hack for the 2008 for quite some time now, over a year, with out a problem.

    I am pretty sure it applies to Gen3.
    I recall one PriusCat member from WV selling a used white ~2012 PiP here for $21000, and he had installed it.
    Back in 2012 WV had $7500 credit + $2500 Fed credit, that guy probably paid $16000 for the new PiP, so he was making a killling. Shortly after his sale, used PiP prices dropped a lot, I forget why (market forces).

    I am a sucker for nice white PiP but I managed to hold my powder dry.

    If this was a good idea, car makers would be on it like dogs on a squirrel.
    It is NOT.

    Running the engine "cold" encourages sludge buildup......and we all know what a bane sludge is. :eek:

    It also encourages carbon buildup in the exhaust system.
    It also reduces lubrication efficiency.

    Certainly this hack is at your own risk, but I am not aware of any documented maintenance issues. It just speeds up the gen2/gen3 progression to warmed-up stage, which is slow due to California standards.

    I feel like my 2020 RAV4HV does NOT need this hack, since the low-MPG-while-cold-issue seems to have been solved by Toyota. Amazing the MPG's Toyota hybrids can achieve these days, even for larger cars like RAV4 and Sienna.
