I do not know, tough call... When I get the hankerin' for somethin' somewhat unique, I'll go to Starbuck's and get crap like the apple-maple-cider thingy, but Dunkin' Donuts always gets my basic tea absolutely right. Of course, some days I might feel more pretentious than others, so that also has a factor on where I go. All things considered though, I think I'd have to give my vote to:

    Dunkin' Donuts

I do like the Krispies better for donuts; however, their coffee is not good. Dunkin' Donuts coffee is amazing!

I recently bought the Braun Tassimo home "brewing" system. You can purchase various varieties of beverages from espresso to latte to hot chocolate to tea from an ever expanding list of companies including Gevalia, Maxwell house, Suchards, etc. It is a pod system and the coffee etc is excellent. So instead of choosing from 5 different Starbucks and 4 differenct Dunkin Donuts between the hospital and my office (12 blocks) I now self brew and carry - and enjoy it enough I might even buy one for my office. Totally "messless".

I'm mostly with eagle on this one. Krispy Kreme's got the best donuts, hands down. But I don't drink coffee, and I prefer to make my own tea. If I'm at home, it's done the old fashioned way. We've got a tea kettle to boil the water, and I take it from there. At work, just the hot water from the water cooler, but otherwise the same.

Thing about Krispy Kreme donuts is, although I do admit, I don't think anything else comes close, they turn into bricks when they hit your stomach! Don't get me wrong, few things amuse me more than gorging out on KK donuts and ice cold coke, only to vomit about 2 hours later with no regrets, but man, there's something that makes that dough turn into some sort of dense gelatinous mass when it comes into contact with your stomach bile...

    That's pretty cool...!

Thing is, for me, I don't think it's as much about the drink, as it is about the "shopping" aspect. In this respect, Starbuck's wins, as you can do some low-level shopping there, and Dunkin Donuts is pretty much a let's-get-down-to-business place. I wonder if Starbuck's smashing success is based, whole or in part, on that particular psychological component?

It's sort of like Starbuck's feels like a mall, whereas Dunkin Donuts, a factory warehouse you stop into to have your furniture tossed into the back of your truck by some punk kids....

Krispy Kreme is a 10, the best on the poll is at best a 5.

Sorry, but when the runaway only choice isn't on the poll it's kind of a bummer, hehe.

KK preempted the "other" category, so I voted for Dunkin' Donuts, my coffee vendor of choice when traveling. My usual commute never gets me out of the house (gotta love networking) but even when I am heading out to a client first thing in the morning, I need my coffee to get going in the AM and there is no way I'm going to wait until I'm already on the road for my morning dose of caffeine. So my real vote is for the Black & Decker "cup at a time" drip coffee maker on the kitchen counter :), where I can brew whatever ground up debris is in the can, or, later in the day, grind and brew some good Zabar's beans when I'm awake enough to appreciate the difference...

    Very descriptive. :p

I don't drink coffee nearly as much as I used to. But when I do drink coffee, I'll go to the local coffee shop in my town. For me, knowing the owner makes the coffee tastes a little better. Plus they've got awesome lemon squares & cinnamon croissant rolls.

Starbucks coffee always tasted to me like it's been left on the burner too long. These days I'll go with a decaf green tea.

Those are really nice machines. If I were still the coffee-hound I used to be, I'd definitely look into one of these.

Nationwide action against Starbucks: Nov 24th - 25th

Starbucks Workers demand the right to Organize

This November 24th-25th, stand in solidarity with Starbucks workers as we call for an end to the anti-union campaign waged by Starbucks and for the reinstatement of all unlawfully fired workers. In addition we are calling on Starbucks to give Ethiopia control over its coffee.

Starbucks workers around the country and the world are organizing to make our jobs better and finally have a real, independent voice at work. A powerful voice that our managers, even the whole company, have no choice but to listen too. By organizing a union baristas in NYC have seen our wages increased, schedules stabilized and respect from our bosses. Over the last two years, however, Starbucks has consistently responded to workers organizing with harassment, intimidation and illegal firings. A National Labor Relations Board settlement was reached in March of 2006 that reinstated two workers and forced Starbucks to pay back wages and change discriminatory policies. The Settlement did little to stop the anti-union campaign and since December of 2005 five workers in NYC were unlawfully fired for engaging in protected union activity.

Joseph Agins fired from Starbucks at 2nd ave and 9th, December 12th 2005

Charles Fostrom fired from Starbucks at 57th and Lexington, July 11th 2006

Evan Winterscheidt fired from Starbucks at 14th and 6th ave, July 18th 2006

Daniel Gross fired from Starbucks at 36th and Madison, August 5th 2006

Isis Saenz fired from Starbucks at 57th and Lexington, November 1st 2006

The IWW Starbucks workers union is calling for action. On November 24th-25th union members and supporters will be taking action to demand reinstatement of all five fired workers and an end to the Anti-union campaign.

The IWW Starbucks Workers Union is building solidarity across the coffee industry. We are calling on Starbucks to sign an agreement that acknowledges Ethiopia's ownership of its coffee names. Securing the rights to names such as Sidamo, Harar and Yirgacheffe would enable Ethiopia's coffee industry and farmers to earn an additional $88 million per year.

    * Coffee makes up 40-50% of Ethiopia's export income;
    * 15 million Ethiopians are dependent on the coffee trade;
    * One in four people live on less than $1 a day and 80% of its people live on less than $2 a day; and
    * Ethiopia ranks in the bottom 10 of the UN human development index of income, health and education.

If Starbucks is genuine in its commitment to farmers it will sign the licensing agreement Ethiopia has offered.

I voted 'other' because there's a convenience store chain where I live called WaWa, and I like their coffee best, altho the 'Quick Chek' chain has started using the same brand. I really like their Chocolate Macaedmia Nut coffee, and their 'plain coffee' is pretty good.

I DO like the plain coffee at Dunkin' Donuts, but hate their flavored coffees. They've started up a line of espressos and cappucinos lately that are also good - for a while they did something they CALLED capuccino that came from a powdery mix with lots of sugar.

7-11 makes acceptable coffee, flavored and regular.

I agree with Proco that Starbucks coffee always tastes burnt not to mention that it's very costly. But Squid is right about the 'shopping experience' - I'd rather sit and sip coffee in a Starbucks than a Dunkin' Donuts.

Neither. I brew my own in my office using a Braun Drip Coffee maker and I grind my own columbian beans that I get from a grocery store that roasts the beans themselves. You can watch them roast the beans on a roaster they have in the store and the smell is amazing. Coffee has to be fresh. I recommend grinding your own beans and finding a coffee roaster that sells fresh beans. Sometimes I try Ethiopian or Kenyan, but Kenyan is very acidic. I will go to Starbucks, but only if I'm away from home and need to rest and relax. Their coffee is burned tasting compared to my own. As for donuts, Krispy Creme are wonderful, but I didn't just lose 10 pounds by eating donuts. Truth is, there are some things you just can't put in your mouth without asking for obesity, and donuts are on that list. I've learned to enjoy a banana or apple as much as a donut. (Homer Simpson, are you listening?)

I honestly cannot remember the last time I ate a doughnut. I used to pop 'TimBits' like the candy they are, but that was back when I got so much exercise it really didn't matter how many calories I snarfed. I usually brew my own coffee, but it's Tim Horton's if I buy it. (Did you know the letters of Tim Horton's can be rearranged to say Stim North?) Wait...

Squid?! Is that really you? Drinking tea? Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Only Earl Grey, right, not any of that 'fag' tea like liquorice spice? I know, you're really just trying to find out how many 'real men' are left, right? :D

Why aren't you telling us something like how many insect parts per million are permitted in tea bags?

Timbits! How that takes me back to my days in Canada. True North strong and free, Molson Canadian, Labatt's Blue! I used to live in London, Ontario. I also lived in Victoria, BC.

I just won't eat donuts now, or potato chips or any of that high calorie "food". It takes too much exercise to burn it off.

    Where are you? BC?

As for coffee, it is all mood dependent for me between Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, and homebrew.
-Dunkin Donuts is more accessible on the road when I am travelling out of the metro Atlanta Area.
-Starbucks when I have the time to go inside and relax. Homebrew when I am feeling poor.
-Homebrew also leads to overindulgence, because I drink the whole pot.

I don't buy anything to eat at any of the places, because it is not worth it in the long run.

For you folks raving about Krispy Kreme - you've obviously never been to Dunkin Donuts. If donuts were MPG, Dunkin Donuts would be a Prius and Krispy Kreme would be a Hummer H2.

Sorry, I have to disagree with you BIG TIME on this one. If I wanted a piece of white bread dipped in sugar water (aka, a glazed Dunkin' Donut), I could make that at home. :p

However, a glazed Krispy warm and fresh off the conveyor that literally melts in your mouth...that's worth getting up early for!

I do dig DD's crullers, though. Those are tasty! And their coffee is truly nectar of the Gods.

Funny, there was a news report on recently that was totally mirroring this back and forth. It was just about the donuts, though, and how rabid folks are about their preferred vendor.

I agree that Dunkin Donuts have no taste whatsoever, and that makes Krispy Kremes preferable. But the local bakery where I grew up made incredibly good glazed and raised donuts (as well as other pastries). I first tasted a Dunkin Donut in 1966 when I went away to college and couldn't believe they had no taste at all.

Krispy Kremes aren't really all that good, either, but at least they have SOME taste in the dough and they are certainly more crispy than a DD.

But I've had donuts that were even worse than Dunkin Donuts - totally bland dough and waxy-tasting toppings.

The closest thing I've had to a 'good doughnut' since 1966 were the beignets at Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans.

OK, if a Krispy Kreme is FRESHLY MADE (ie, less than five minutes old), it is Teh Yum.

However, an old Dunkin Donuts donut beats an old Kripy Kreme hands down. In case you never had Krispy Kreme, here is the recipe of how to make them:

    Take a bunch of sugar
    Add sugar
    Mix generously with more sugar
    Top with sugar

Voila! You have made a Krispy Kreme donut!
