Yes, this is normal... Study up on how to use a "pulse & glide" driving technique... There's instances in that hyper efficient driving style that you can still be lead-footed. Also keep adding a couple few pounds of tire pressure till your traction issues come up and then let a little air out. I keep my tires up at about 45psi.

Perhaps you could create a financial incentive for her learning "pulse & glide" technique for Prius?

I had two(2) cars in the ’70’s that didn’t get MPG but actually GPM, on high-octane premium gas. I was a snotty punk kid back then. Now ... the way I drive ... gets me 60-mpg from an ’05 G2. I pay much more attention to traffic and signals. I coast into lights before they change. I use “cruise control” a lot too. I also drive within 2-mph of the limit. It’s crazy stupid funny how it doesn’t make me late or anything and I drive up on the same “speedsters” at stoplights. I drive on tires 2-3 psi over. I get them checked the first of the month. My car is also waxed/polished with Meguiar’s products for better aerodynamics. ... NO ... that really makes NO difference ... but it keeps me a little bit younger and cooler thinking that it does. Lots of classic speed-boat racers I used to know did like and use their lemon-oil for better slickness in the water.
