Make it a seasonal flu/rona cocktail and I'll get an appointment every October to get poked in exchange for a $5 Target gift card.

they are working on it from what i understand. and many places were rewarding people getting vaccinated with way more than five bucks, so that shouldn't be an issue

Short to none. My wife's green light to go back to work was the rapid antigen test administered at a site, (non at home kit). I just asked her (she's a pediatrician) and she notes that there have been cases of false +. "So tomorrow when we test the kids (on a field trip) if they test positive we'll keep repeating".

I did some more reading after I posted #6007, and added the resources I found here.

The upshot was that PCR tests are definitely prone to positive results unnecessarily in the aftermath of a resolved case; they can identify bits left over after the virus has been destroyed.

That's generally not expected of the rapid antigen tests; they respond to the antigen present on the intact virus. A negative antigen test result is considered a bit tentative, but a positive one is considered a strong indication of virus currently present.

The fact that I got a positive result on day 8, and especially that it was whompingly positive, probably does mean I was still at work getting the last of the virus out of my schnoz, even though the rest of my symptoms were already cleared up. I did get a nice clean negative result on day 14.

sister in law picked it up on a trip to canada. when she booked the trip, they required a neg test or you had to stay and isolate. so she made arrangements for that.
by last week the requirement was dropped, so when she tested positive the morning she was flying home, she got on the plane anyway.
now she's sleeping upstairs and husband in the living room for 5 days.

am i reading this wrong? they say home tests are only 80% effective at detecting virus particles if taken 2 days in a row.
they say that's a good number. but if i'm going to see my immune suppressed granny, i don't want a 20% chance of infecting her.(n)

    Wow, that is just horrible.
That's why they also have PCR tests. Convenience or accuracy? Choose your poison.

i wish i could find current daily hospitalizations and deaths by age group. anecdotally, i'm seeing severe cold/flu symptoms in vaccinated people with no comorbidities, other than age.

I'm curious. Having this knowledge may have been important early pandemic. But what would be the use today? What would you do with information?

just curiosity and conversation. it would be interesting to know what kind of bug we're dealing with, how it affects the vaccinated, and what happens when new variants appear.
i find it fascinating. long covid is intriguing as well

I was morbidly fascinated early pandemic. Now, I am just tired of touching my face all day because I have to wear masks when I honestly don't think anyone cares anymore.

i agree. being a senior (so somewhat immune compromised) i'm still being very careful, but i am also tired of the whole thing, and wish i could just get back to normal like a lot of people.
but i really don't want it, because i might hit the lottery
and i am also concerned about long covid, which they are now saying you could get at a later date, even if you feel fine for a long time.

My wife and I just got over Covid after avoiding it for over two years. Thanks to the Pfizer antiviral pills (Paxlovid), we got over it in about 10 days.

that's what i'm seeing anecdotally, i'm glad it wasn't too bad for you.

but i'm also seeing increased hospitalizations in ma, and variants 4 and 5 which seem to be more dangerous.

I have a family member and an in-law both with COVID, a course of paxlovid, followed by post-paxlovid COVID rebound, which is apparently a thing.

yes, they are thinking the course needs to be longer to clean out all the virus particles.
