Cost to replace Coolant Temperature Sensor

    Hi All-

    New here. I have 2001. I just had a repair shop quote me 1k to replace the engine coolant temperature sensor.
    They said the reason it is so expensive is because it very hard to get to and they have to disable (remove) the hybrid system. Can anyone verify that the job is indeed this complicated?

    I once had a shop tell me it was going to cost me a lot of replace a belt because it was hard to access (different car). Luckily I new it was a chain! not a belt and was very easy to access.


    *For reference I live in Austin, TX so repair costs are going to be expensive here.

    Nope . Their guys like guys I work with all over the United States that aren't super expensive but you have to know how to find them The temp sensor from what I understand but you're asking I think there's a temp sensor in the metal under the metal cover of the inverter the thing that says hybrid system you would have to look at the schematic of that to see if that temp sensor screws in and is replaceable I haven't personally looked I have one out and I can go out and look but I just never have I didn't realize the temp sensor was go bad technically speaking there is another sensor looks like it's probably a temp sensor on the metal canister in the left fender well just below the headlight I have pictures of all this and I have the parts off the car just because I do I'm putting them away for storage and then getting rid of the carcass so I just had my inverter all apart replacing my ABS actuator pump accumulator whatever that stupid thing is so I didn't see it temp sensor inside of the inverter but I also did not look real hard I have another inverter with the cover off sitting in the shop I'll go look in it right now and see if I can see it but best to look on a schematic of the engine or of the inverter and see if there's a replaceable temp sensor or a part number something what I was doing was converting my constantly failing pancake inverter pump I've got a yard full of them here from all walks of manufacturers and prices they all fail quick as I'll get out I took one of the pumps from the fender well of another Prius it looks like a little spa pump I plugged and connected that where my inverter pump goes I guarantee you I will never see the triangle again about my inverter temperature being out of range this thing's moving so much water that's impossible it'll jump out of the tank if you feel it too full I think my problems over with that pump failing not moving water and causing a temp crisis and triangle

    The 2001 engine coolant temperature sensor is on the end of the cylinder head, near the midline of the car. Look for callout 89422 in this drawing:

    It's possible the access could be a little cramped because of the inverter next to it. If so, I doubt any more work would be needed than taking out some inverter bracket bolts and nudging the whole thing to the side, with all the wires and hoses still attached.

    What are the reasons for thinking the sensor needs to be replaced? They are pretty robust little things.

    Those are the only two I could find I don't think there's one in the inverter if it is it's got to be under that gold cover on the bottom and then no wire and looks like it's penetrating that cover that will go to attempt sensor usually real thin wires and all that mess Gray or white plugs nothing if the person had the part and was in my area I'd charge them like 70 bucks to go over there and change that temp sensor that's changeable that black thing with the white plug I don't know what that is I guess that's the one closest to the top it doesn't look like it unscrews maybe it has a bolt in it I didn't look at it that close The other one that's down a little lower near the gold cross tube or whatever is a regular Toyota temp sensor they usually last pretty much forever

    Given that the first post specifically said "engine coolant temperature sensor", I'm pretty sure Gen 1 only has one of those, and it's exactly where callout 89422 points on the drawing above.

    Thanks ChapmanF! Yes, it is the ect sensor. The car has the code P3190, which is for poor engine power. I do know the ect being bad is one of the things that can cause that code. I did some of the basic stuff I could handled - cleaned the mass airflow sensor and throttle body, checked the air filter, and that didn't clear it. The mechanic landed on the sensor being bad. I don't know more than that. The car is currently at the mechanic. Now that I have this schematic I wish I could take a look at my car.
