Intelligent parking Assist…Does it Brake for you if you misjudge?

I have all those toys on my 2016. I use the self park a lot for parallel parking. It operates immediately and has got me into spaces I’d otherwise not dare to attempt. It steers but you control the throttle. I can’t say I’ve ever let it get to the point where I’m close to bumping another car but I’m 99% sure it would auto-stop if I did. The system is very good on the whole. I think I’ve only had 2 occasions, (out of literally 100s of successful parallel parks), where the system has completely got the angle wrong and I’ve had to take manual control as it would have driven into the adjacent car.

For manual parking, yes it will auto stop you both front and rear if you’re about to hit something. It’s very good however it leaves it to the last second to stop -as in inches from the obstacle.

The BSM is excellent. Very useful on dark winter nights on busy dual carriageways and you need to change lane.

The rear reverse radar alarm is good as well. It’s saved me a few times with cyclists/pedestrians but it’s not perfect.

 

I had the BSM and ICS with parking assist on my 2016 Prius Four. The parking features I didn't really use much. You were in charge of throttle/brakes/shifting, it just controlled the steering wheel. The ICS sonar stops the car but like as a last resort sort of thing, with an inch to spare sometimes. The little radar around the car is useful I suppose but during winter up here I mostly kept it off because it would throw up errors and warnings to stop and clean off all the sensors because they got crusted in ice and slush from the road. The parallel parking takes longer to line up and initiate than to just do it yourself. Using auto parking to back into a space is pretty much useless. You have to 'measure' the open spot by driving right by it in a T then it pulls you way back out into the middle of the lane before lining up to back in and it was usually crooked (assuming nobody didn't just pull into the spot while you were 2 car lengths away doing who knows what).

The BSM is also something I didn't use often as I learned during drivers ed how to properly angle my mirrors so there aren't any real blind spots.

The cross traffic alert is pretty nice if you're forced to back out of a parking spot in a busy lot. I usually back into spaces but for angled parking at busy locations it was helpful if a little sensitive (alerting me to a car that was passing my row by pretty far away).

 

On my 2022 XLE Nightshade it will stop you if you are going slow enough and have the settings set for the longest range. HOWEVER the manual warns that it isn’t REALLY DESIGNED to stop you but to ASSIST you in stopping.
The cross traffic system is nice and will even pick up little kids on bicycles (we live in a neighborhood where the 6 and 7 year olds have yet to learn there are other beings in the universe and they get focused on trying to fly ).
The warnings alone are worth the upgrade with so many drivers today being completely unaware of their surroundings.
