Just finished an EGR cooler cleanup. 130k and totally blocked. Got it cleaned up and reinstalled. Double checked all the connections. When the engine starts it surges and stumbles, little response from the accelerator and finally dies. Suggestions? I'm stumped!!

Did you push the pcv and fuel vapour hoses back onto the intake manifold?

    (just guessing)

Yes, my first thought is that something has been overlooked, even with the double-check.

IIRC I've done that, and it ran ok, 'cept had check engine light.

Thanks for the replies. Tore it all down again today. What a bear!! There are a couple of nuts and a stud down in there somewhere!!!
Paid due diligence putting it all back together, especially the gaskets. I realized this is one of those units you don't tighten until all the bolts are in. The car fired right up as she should have. Happy camper here. Now to get the check engine light off......

I had check engine light after one of my EGR forays. Might have been disconnected MAF, can’t remember. Anyway, after about 4~5 startups (after fixing the issue), light went out.
