    Gen 2 Prius;
    Car is maintaining the HV battery charge level poorly, and only charging from the engine, not the brakes anymore.
    Other than that, it drives fine.

    After a bunch of work, managed to find 3 codes off of ScanGauge II: P0300, P0301, P0302. (scangauge had bug from vers 4.13 & took while with tech support to pull them)

    I checked rear ABS sensors and they appear fine. Replaced all 4 spark plugs, and may eventually go in for the coil packs as well.

    Then cleared the codes off the computer; now this is what happens;

    Ran the car around the block with the rear ABS pickups unplugged.... No codes thrown, but those 4 lights are still on.
    Shouldn't there be codes from that? Thought the computer did an ABS self test upon start-up & running unhooked would trigger codes....

    Plugged the pick-ups back in and restarted the car a few times, then drove it....still no codes, but lights still remain on.

    Meanwhile, the car drives well, it just makes funny use of the battery; draining it while the engine idles away, and then overcharging it when I get on the roadway.
    Gas milage is still good.

    I can't make those lights go away.... Anybody know?

    Thanks,

    What is your definition of overcharging it?

    It sounds like you need a proper code reader. See the thread pinned at the top of the Technical Discussion Forum - Gen2 OBD2 app review.

    Scangauge appears to only use data and pull codes from the engine computer (ECM). That's one of the 15+ ecu's on a Gen2 Prius. You need another way to get codes.

    You can find a shop that has a capable scantool to pull codes (and diagnose your fault). Not every shop (or parts store) has a tool that will talk to all the ecu's.

    You can buy a copy of Techstream (Toyota's pc based diagnostic software) and an interface cable. Bootleg versions are on ebay or amazon. Or you can get it "legit" from Toyota (more $$ but less sketchy). Use the search function for more info.

    You can read the sticky thread at the top of the Gen2 Technical discussion forum to see review of several apps and OBD2 bluetooth devices.

    Lastly, some ecu's (such as brake control) can flash out shortened codes on the warning lights if you jumper two specific terminals of the OBD2 port together with the ignition ON. Again use search for "flash codes".

    Overcharging means it continues to ram current into the hybrid battery long after the MFD is displaying 7 green bars, whereas it used to stop and hold it steady at 6 blue bars. I also see much higher voltages displayed in the HV battery voltage readout than I was used to seeing previously.

    The folks at ScanGauge insist that it will read all relevent codes..... guess I should take that with a grain of salt.

    My 3 methods of reading codes are with the ScanGauge II, and using Prius Doctor, and Torque Lite through a BAFX ODBII bluetooth interface.

    The Torque Lite USED to grab the basic codes alright for generic problems, but has since just gone stupid and mute whenever asked to download codes. It still runs the gauges beautifully though.

    Prius Doctor downloads a bunch of nonsense these days when asked for codes. I only use it for hybrid battery block monitoring.

    ScanGauge allows me to program and monitor general things as I drive the car, which I like as the regular dash is quite simple and sparse. Also could grab codes at one time.

    Now I'm thinking of getting that Mini VCI w Techstream, and an old Dell D630 laptop off of Ebay to run it on. I see lots of variations on the VCI and Techstream, like versions and such. Is there anything I should look out for when I order? Are older versions OK, or do I need to sweat the latest updates?

    Also, do they all come out of China, and are they OK?

    Thanks,

    Until the laptop died, I used to run version 9.something and that was just fine for my 06. There was a Techstream thread from about a month ago where you could download a virtual machine image (XP) that had version 12 loaded in it. All you needed was a laptop that could do virtualization (and a VCI dongle). Get virtual box installed. Download and open the image. Connect and enjoy.

    Another option is to read the app review sticky thread at the top of the Gen2 Technical discussion forum. A couple different things to look at there.
