Linear solenoid valve calibration without scan tool

I know it's possible because I've previously done it, but I can't remember exactly how you do it -- I really thought I had bookmarked the procedure, but I can't find it at all.

How do I initiate the linear solenoid valve calibration sequence without a scan tool again? I seem to recall that you short pins 4 and 13, but what -else- do you do? [Edited later to add: for this specific thing it isn't 4 and 13 -- see below]

And while I'm at it, I'm guessing that needing to do it twice in 6k miles suggests something is wrong in this department too?

Edited to add: in case someone sees just this post instead of ChapmanF's original, it's pins 4 and 12, not 4 and 13, for this specific task.
