I was trying to find more information about this but where do I apply ultra black RTV to the valve cover gasket?

    The permatex RTV procedure says:
In this case would I install the valve cover gasket finger tight and wait an hour--then go back and torque it to spec?

I'm honestly not sure how to apply RTV.

    Regards,

The Repair Manual (more info) shows the two places to apply seal packing (“Three Bond 1207B or equivalent,” also sold at U.S. dealers under part number 00295-00103) when installing the cylinder head cover. See the topic Engine/Hybrid System: 1NZ-FXE Engine Mechanical: Engine Unit: Reassembly, step 34.
On the contrary, at least if you’re using Toyota’s materials and procedure, the Repair Manual instructs, “Install the cylinder head cover within 3 minutes of applying seal packing.” There is also a specified sequence for tightening the bolts and nuts.

The waiting comes later: “Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installation.”

I see in the image here that there are two highlighted dark spots which seem to resemble the placement of the bond.

I'm a little confused about the bottom location as it looks like a larger application is needed.

If I were to apply the bond using red on the black spot:

The top required a single bead so a small amount of bond is required. Meanwhile the bottom appears to be a column and so a vertical bead is drawn.

Would this be a correct application?

    Thank you very much!

That's the joint between timing chain cover and cylinder head, and the reason Toyota calls for sealant there. Honda's are similar.

Yes, there are two places where the seal packing is applied, one a longer bead and one a shorter bead, as shown by the heavy lines in the illustration. Both beads are in the horizontal plane.

The cylinder head cover is sealed mainly by its pre-formed gasket, part number 11213-21011 (shown in catalog Figure 11-04, Cylinder Head); the seal packing is applied only along the seams between the oil pump assembly (timing chain cover) and the cylinder head.

As @Mendel Leisk mentioned, if you look back to the illustration for step 26(c), “INSTALL TIMING CHAIN COVER,” in the same procedure, you’d see that much more seal packing, of two types, is called for when the oil pump assembly is installed to the cylinder head and cylinder block.
