2006 - No horn - spiral assembly advice.

    Hi. I went on vacation for 10 days, came home and there was no horn (weather had changed and also lost some air in my tires) - TPMS was on. Put air in the tires and TPMS was fine.

    I followed the advise here and found that the horn does work when the steering wheel is in full counter clockwise turn, but no other position. So I assume this is spiral assembly repair.

    I don't have the tools/qualifications to make this repair myself, can someone give me some ball-park figures or an alternative economical repair (put in an after-market horn for example) before I call around for quotes.

    I don't need to use the horn but I do need to pass the annual state inspection

    It's not a difficult repair. The part lists for $318 from Toyota and you should be able to find online dealers willing to sell it around $230 or so.

    Any reasonably competent shop should be able to change it for you in less than an hour.

    Wow I must have gone crazy I thought I just saw the clock springs it's called for I don't know man like $60 and it looked pretty good but whoa was me I don't know. I took the one out of my '05 put it in my '09 and even went ahead and took the two-speed rear wiper part so I use the whole combination switch essentially and it wasn't a difficult repair at all. Needed a 19 mm socket the torx bit that done does the side wings to get them pad and airbag off the steering wheel and I was able to clean up and rearrange some of the wiring for the button switches and I use the button switches out of the '05 also as they were in way nicer shade took about 45 minutes one of the easier repairs I would say you'll get to do on this model better revel in it.

    Thanks for this advise. I didn't find anyone who would charge 1 hour of labor, because the book they use says 2 hours of labor; but i was able to buy my own part and they would install it. I am buying it from an online dealer for $220 or so like you said.

    Kind of why do it myself because I know I can do it in about 45 minutes That's a fact most anybody can that can wield a screwdriver and hold the gun to undo the 19 under the airbag pad but then you'll start fooling around cleaning things and it'll take an hour and 10 minutes No problem there The car doesn't have to be picked up and you're not paying for it and like I said I thought I recently saw the part from amiyama or whoever for like $66 it's actually a pretty simple part and I think a few manufacturers make it it's a very common part on every vehicle

    That's great, it's a great skillset that you have. Unfortunately I do not have the knowledge, time, tools, or parts and I'm willing to pay but also looking for a deal/value.

    The $66 part is a POS made in China duplicate. There are a handful of threads on the forum of people who have used them, mostly with short term success. I'm sure some have longer success, you just rarely hear about it because they're not pissed off. I grab these OEMs sometimes from salvage yards if I see a Prius and have extra time. I have 3 or 4 clock springs, control switches and even steering wheels on the shelf. I've been able to help a couple locals, but Boston is a bit of a drive for me, lol.

    Yes I grab a lot of them from the salvage yard too and generally I don't buy the $66 one I get to 88 or the $94 one and whatever they usually seem to fare a little better than I don't know the $66 when I guess but I'm certainly not keen on paying 200 I guess if I was absolutely forced to but that would never happen LKQ was too close
