America's VW ID.Buzz Will Pack An Extra 10.6 Inches | CarBuzz

The NA version will be 270mm (10.6 inches) longer than the European version, because apparently we use the third row more than Europeans (aka have more crap in the back). The entire length will now be 4,981mm (196.1 inches). The wheelbase will also grow to 3,256mm (128.2 inches).

    And in other news:
Volkswagen Is Considering An ID.Buzz Electric Pickup Truck | CarBuzz

Yeah they are thinking of an ID.Buzz truck. This could be years, if ever, before this will be seen.

Range on VW ID.Buzz looks pretty good as tested by Bjørn Nyland. He ran the standard European spec RWD, 21" tires and 82 kWh battery van. During testing he did manage to run the battery down to 1% and got 180 kW while charging that eventually dropped to about 80 kW during the final part of charging to 100%. Took about 50 minutes to charge from 1% to 100%.
Volkswagen ID. Buzz Range Test Reveals Very Good Results

    Summary: Tested at 7ºC (45ºF) and 10ºC (50ºF)
    For 7ºC test they did 120 km/h (75 mph) and got a range of 247 km (154miles). Energy consumption was 302 Wh/km (486 Wh/mile)
Actual Battery capacity: 74.5 kWh. Should note during testing part of the test experienced rain and some of the test was conducted at night.

    For the 10ºC test they averaged 90 km/h (56 mph) and got a range of 326 km (225 miles). Energy consumption was 206 Wh/km (331 Wh/mile).

Late, the ID.Buzz is very compelling. My 1966 VW MicroBus was very practical even if the suicide front seats, cheap steering, and body rust wasn’t enough to retire in 1975.

Now they want to make a GTX version of ID.Buzz - 250 kW (335 hp). That'll make those peace beads sway.

Hot 335 HP Volkswagen ID Buzz GTX Van Planned for This Year

Apparently the R&D head of VW, Kai Gruenitz, is saying there will be a VW ID.Buzz GTX available in Europe by the end of this year. And yes it'll be a dual motor setup, but no GTX will be coming to North American so we'll be stuck with the 295 hp AWD long wheelbase version. Probably not enough "Oh Jesus handles" in the back.

More information on when the Long Wheel Base (LWB) ID.Buzz will be shown. The 7 seat LWB Commercial ID.Buzz is supposed to debut at the Amelia Concours d'Elegance (an island off of the east coast of Florida about 30 east of Jacksonville International Airport, Jacksonville, FL) according to the web site spider7.com.

The other day, I scooped the 3-row, 7-seater LWB (long wheelbase) commercial prototype set for VW's next-generation minivan "ID.Buzz", but it turned out that the world premiere will be held in June.

At the "Amelia Concours d'Elegance", in addition to the June debut, it was announced that it will be released in the second half of 2024, but there is no official announcement yet as to whether it will be the 2024 model or the 2025 model.

At the same event, VW vans are lined up. A dozen old T2s were on display for him, including some wild variations like the 1962 half-track. Also see the actual bus once owned by Jerry Garcia of the rock band "Grateful Dead" and the original transporter used in the 80's movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". , and some famous models were also exhibited.

The ID.Buzz two-row, five-passenger base model is 4.72m long, but the long-wheelbase version stretches by 30cm (10.6 inches) to reach a total length of approximately 5m, with a 2/3/2 seating layout for up to seven passengers. . By increasing the floor, it is possible to install a larger battery, and it is rumored to be equipped with a 111 kWh battery that greatly exceeds the 82 kWh battery installed in the base model. The seat is also mounted on a rail system that allows it to rotate, swivel and slide freely in different directions.

The cockpit features a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch infotainment screen. The concept is the same as the base model, with playful and colorful accents.

At the world premiere in June, a high-performance "GTX" version with dual motors and all-wheel drive that delivers a maximum output of 355ps is also expected."

The LWB version seems to me to make a lot more sense. I'm not sure what a five-seat minivan is really for: if I want five seats, I'll buy a car.

My daughter and I went to Fully Charged Live in Sydney last week. The LDV Mifa 9 was there - it's beaten VW to the draw on seven-seat minivan EVs.

The Mifa 9 had a truly lovely interior. The middle-row seats were possibly the nicest car seats I've ever sat in.

But it is expensive - pushing A$150,000 / US$100,000 in Australia. That's likely to be on a par with the LWB ID.Buzz.

Why does it have phones in the armrests?

LED controls for the seats and middle HVAC. If you look closer, you'll see a stick figure power seating adjustment and possibly HVAC. Who knows, may be attached via Bluetooth but I kind of doubt it.

For the price it probably has motorized sliding of the seats then.

I'd assume that as well as possible massage controls.

@drash is right. The screens in the seats give you multi-way adjustment. You can slide the seats back and forward, or left and right, depending on what your priorities are for space, as well as recline, and tip the seat base, and bring out the leg rests. You can slide the armrests in and out too. It also controls multiple massage, heating and cooling functions.

Honestly, the only rear seats I've been in that came close were in a Phantom.

VW ID. Buzz Long-Wheelbase Spied As A Maxi Electric Microbus | Carscoops
    id.buzzlw.jpg
According to the CarScoops article, the ID.Buzz long-wheelbase version will be heading to US markets in 2024 after it hits European markets. So far the battery will stay at 82 kWh and the rear-wheel drive only motor will still be 150 kW (201 hp). Volkswagen did mention it might get the ID.7's new APP550 drivetrain with a 210 kW (282 hp)/550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. Different battery capacities are also expected to be considered. Makes sense to put the upgraded powertrain in an elongated ID.Buzz. The current 82 kWh battery is rated at 423 km (263 miles) at WLTP. EPA estimates would shrink that to roughly 360 km (224 miles). This wouldn't include a loss due to extra weight and size.

For a limo-grade Uber to do the airport run for a family of four with full luggage, or for a family of five with luggage and leisure gear on a long distance roadtrip.

In many places that are not the USA, trip times and distances are shorter, so vans get maximized for seat count as there's no luggage to speak of for the short journeys.

I get this when it comes to a luxury MPV like a Lexus LM. But the ID.Buzz just doesn't have that level of fanciness: it would work well for an Audi or Bentley equivalent, though. But even the LDV Mifa 9 did have a back row that folded away, and there didn't seem to be any sort of sacrifice in terms of second-row space or luggage space.

This bit makes sense. But you lose very little luggage space - and gain a lot of flexibility - with a fold-away rear bench.

I had a Chrysler Grand Voyager for a bit as a moving-stuff-around car. It was very useful when we were furnishing the houses in Broken Hill. The back seats folded flat into the floor, giving huge luggage space if you only had the front two rows up, as well as loads of room for the middle-row passengers.

The second-row seats were an amazing design too: big, comfortable armchairs, but they folded and rolled into recesses in the floor if you needed to turn the car into a van.

It was a car with a lot of clever design features. It's just a shame it was so badly made.

The stow and go seats of Chrysler minivans is a patent that they do not share. A VW minivan sold here was a rebadged model of the Town and Country/Caravan. While it had the underfloor spaces for storage, the seats did not fold up into them. Other brands had seats that only fold partially out of the way, or could be removed and stored outside the van when not needed.

As for the ID.Buzz not having a third row, it is the short version. My guess they ran into weight limitations for the car's size, or it would cross the planned price point.

I think what we call the Grand Voyager is what you call the Town and Country.

It's a shame Chrysler won't share the Stow'n'Go patent. It is a brilliant system, especially if you are one of those people who both (a) needs to flip between carrying people and carrying stuff and (b) doesn't like having skin on their knuckles.

But (b) is a minor criticism: it really is a useful system. It would be nice to have such a system, but in a car that is good. Imagine a Kia Carnival or Hyundai Staria with that sort of flexibility.

But I assume it would be less of an option for an EV, since the batteries are likely to be in the floor.

I'm sure you're right. But it really does seem weird. It's almost at the point where they should change its designation from "people mover" to "person mover"/

Yes, the Pacific (plug in)Hybrid doesn't have the fold and stow seats for the second for the battery. Maybe it could get them back with changes to the body, or a shorter range BEV could keep them.
But they have the person mover in the cargo version. How would you distinguish between them for marketing?
