Sigh... Two weeks? without my Prius

    It's been a while since I've been to the forum, but I want to share this morning's pictures.

    Haiku says it best:

    stopped at a red light
    there is a car front and back
    Waiting for green - Boom!

    or maybe:

    waiting stopped in line
    a sudden crunch - boom - boom - boom
    I'll miss my Prius

    Car behind was a lincoln towncar (hunk o steel) and he was hit from behind by an F150 (another hunk o steel). You can see from the pictures how the rest of my morning went. Fortunately I was ~1 mile from the body shop I used a year ago for another stupid driver. Guy behind me went to the hospital - his car didn't absorb any of the impact. his car transmitted most of the energy into the driver's back and my rear! I actually was pushed about 4 feet forward into another car, which also broke the plastic bits between the grille and the bumper. The back is worse off (obviously)

    Opinions? Anyone want to take a stab at the estimate (I'll know the real number tomorrow)? (05 model)

    I don't think it's totaled, but I'm an engineer and not an insurance adjuster.

    At least my plate frame appears to be intact! :blink:

    wow Brandon, sorry to hear about your accident. damage estimate will be high because the Prius body panels go for a very high premium. hoping you come out as well as i did on mine

    The guy behind probably didn't have his foot on the brake. Some people think that if you see someone is about to rear-end you, you should take your foot off the brake to lessen the impact. It lessens the impact alright - to the back of the car - but your body takes more of a toll (think whiplash), and if you get pushed into anything in front of you, then you've got damage on both ends of the car. It's better to keep your foot firmly on the brake and let the rear of the car take the full impact, protecting yourself and contents. This also keeps more damage on the offending vehicle and not innocent vehicles in front of you.

    on my accident, the other guys insurance company paid me $23,509.80 for my car and provided a rental for 3½ weeks while they worked the claim which wasnt bad for a car that i paid $22,043.47 total cost out the door.

    i got a 2006, added $2200 in upgrades, cost me 26,307.74.

    all in all, i drove my 04 for 28,000 miles and the cost can be looked at in two ways. it was $600 if you consider the upgrades and $2800 if you dont. so in the worst case scenario, it was just over $100 a month.

    Oh boy, sorry to hear that. The body seems intact which will definitely lower the estimate price since the body shell is probably the most expensive item to repair.

    I'm actually worried a little about the body, since the tonneau (sp?) cover doesn't work right any more. the little slots that hold it open are now too far apart! I think this means the frame is torqued, and I'm worried that they won't notice until they're done installing the new hatch. Still no estimate from the adjuster yet, so I'm not sure what to think.

    the salvage value of the Prius is so high that a total is likely. on my Prius, i was told that damage exceeding $15000 would total the vehicle and that is less than 2/3rd's its value.
