Diesel in 2010 Prius Gen 3 empty gas tank. Drove for five (5) miles. Repair recommendations?

My daughter filled my 120K mile 2010 Prius V's empty gas tank with diesel and then drove it five miles. (Note: Just to get ahead of this discussion topic — I had already had the diesel warning chat with her when she started driving. It was clearly insufficient. My fault.)

When it started driving rough, she quickly pulled over and called me. She left it running a few more minutes as she was in a bad neighborhood and wanted to stay locked in the car.

I had it towed to my local Toyota dealership.

    Here's what they recommended:

    Price Item
    1 $314.18 12V Battery
2 $132.88 FUEL INJECTOR CLEANING SERVICE (2 cans of fuel injector cleaner)
    3 $206.63 SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT
    4 $132.88 FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE--CLEANS FUEL INTAKE
5 $749.88 DROP THE TANK TO CLEAN IT AND R&R (remove and replace) DIESEL WITH NEW FUEL
    6 $1,511.88 Replace fuel injectors

Item (1): I'm good with replacing the battery. And I read here in PriusChat that Toyota's battery is really good.

Items (2) and (4) seem to be a) a rip-off; and b) the same as each other. Right? What injector cleaner fluid should I buy and put in the Prius?

Item (3) makes sense. Spark plugs. Right?

Item (5) seems too much. Can't they just siphon the gas tank for $200?

Item (6) is a lot of money. Is there any way to know if the injectors are damaged? Is it safe to just drive it and see if they fail? Will doing so cause more damage (more expense or risk of harm to occupants) in the future?

Should I just have it towed to my local mechanic?

    Thanks, folks. Really.

Unless your 12v is testing bad, diesel fuel doesn't destroy the battery.

If you're going to do #6 replace fuel injectors, #2 of cleaning injector is just crazy.

I would say change out the fuel and spark plugs to start. No need to drop the tank if you can remove the fuel.

The 12 volt battery (#1) seems unrelated. Maybe instead of dropping the tank: remove rear seat, pry off the fuel pump lid, and just siphon out the gas. Then do ONE of the fuel injector cleaning services (LOL), leave the old injectors and spark plugs as-is and see how it goes with some fresh fuel.

We did a few of these on a Mercedes....
Draining the tank is needed to get the diesel out. You could pull the bottom back seat,
remove the fuel pump and siphon on the diesel. Then fill will gas.
Jump the fuel pump relay and run it for a few minutes to get all the diesel out of the injector lines.

You probably should pull the plugs and clean them with brake or carb cleaner.
Depending on how many miles on them you could replace them.

Before putting the plugs back in, Ready the car, and let he motor spin, which should activate
the injectors and get the little bit of diesel out.
Then install the plugs and you "should" be okay.

sounds like you need a good shop that would do it differently

do what Mendel suggested; should be good enough to get your car back running /

2,4&6 are what you need to look at.

They want to clean your dirty fuel system twice (2&4) and then replace them (6).

To remove the diesel, you don't have to remove the fuel pump and siphon it out. Disconnect the fuel line before the fuel injectors, connect a hose between the fuel line and a fuel container, and apply 12V DC to the fuel pump.

If I were to drain the tank myself, using the fuel pump to pump the fluid out into containers, I would do it twice.
First time, pump it until diesel stops coming out.
Add 3 gallons of gas to dilute remaining diesel. Pump it again until it stops flowing. Then fill the tank.
If you want to get really crazy, use a shop vac to try to pull diesel out of the fuel injector header. Hold the hose about an inch away from the opening and the airstream should cause a siphon effect. I've never tried it before, but it sounds like fun. I don't know that I would try it with gas, but diesel? I probably would. The more you get out of the lines, the easier life will be.

There's a big difference between a prius and an ICE when dealing with diesel like this. It's easy to recharge a 12v cranking battery in an ICE car and try again. Not so easy to recharge the HV battery in a Prius if you don't get the engine started quickly. You're not going to have a whole lot of tries before the HV battery is depleted, then it's welcome to the pain-train....

No need to make this difficult. A "little Diesel will NOT hurt a gas engine. It's very deluted.
Using the fuel pump to drain 2 gallons will take a VERY long time! If you have a 12 gallon or
above fuel container, you could hook it up and start pulling the plugs. But when it starts running
dry, you best stop it so you don't damage the fuel pump.
We have used old fuel pumps for this that still pumps volume, but no pressure. And it damaged that
    pump, no big deal.
Then fill the tank with at least 5 gallons of GASOLINE. Then jump the fuel pump. You don't need an
outside 12v battery. After a few minutes all the deisel will be out of the fuel lines. There will be less than
5% of deisel in the gasoline. You could jump the fuel injectors with a 9 volt battery, and jump the fuel
pump again and each injector for 5 or 10 seconds, that will get the gasoline in them.
But letting the engine run for a few seconds with the plugs out will do the same thing. And it will blow the
deisel out. Put rags over the spark plugs holes so you don't have a mess.
It's not lone enough to deplete the hybrid battery. Unless you had already run it low.

On the deisel Mercedes, people have put gas in the tank instead of deisel. Draining the tank, replacing the
fuel filter by the engine, and filling it will transmission fluid and pumping the primer pump is enough to get it
going. It runs rough for several second then starts to stablize as the deisel clears everything out.
I've done this at least 10 times. It's worked everytime. It's the same for deisel in a gas engine.

It would be nice to get an update on what "eirans" has had done, or has not done....

Dang, I've heard of folks accidentally putting gasoline into a diesel but not vice versa...isn't the green Diesel pump larger and won't insert into a Prius? (Or is that old school, now? I haven't driven a diesel since my military days driving M9's which had zero power anything and you knew it!)

Soemthing is a different size. But since I've only put gas in a gas engine, I wouldn't know. :)

Yes, all the stations where I've looked at or used, the diesel pump has always had a larger diameter nozzle to help prevent this type of incident from happening.

maybe tom made some repairs to this diesel pump and just installed whatever nozzle he had laying around.

Here in California diesel historically is more expensive than even premium (91). Supposedly the diesel nozzle is wider which will not fit into the smaller gas opening.

    Two possibilities in my mind:

    1. The one who filled it really loves their Prius and wants only the best (most expensive fuel) for their car.

    2. Hates their car so much they went through the challenge of filling it even with the nozzle not fitting correctly. (I guess they wanted something else/a non-Prius).

Having a Mercedes turbo diesel C class motorhome - there's no "supposedly" about it .... the diesel fuel nozzle is too large to fit a gasoline fill tube. And yes, diesel fuel is more expensive (we see it typically to be 20% more) than primium gasoline in all of the 14 or 15 states we've driven through. Apparently removing the sulfur from diesel jacks the price up, plus you have to add DET (diesel exhaust treatment) periodically - maybe every 8 to 12 refills - turning on the size of your fuel tank & your DET tank.
