Toyota Crown Announcement includes Toyota’s 4th Hybrid Type

    So far the only confirmed one for the US is the crossover/sedan.

    We have sizes as more info is scooped out of Japan. Bestcarweb.jp has the following sizes for the "Crown sisters" as they call them.

    translation:
    "Sport/Length 4710mm (185.4 inches) x Width 1880mm (74 inches) x Height 1550mm (61 inches)
    Crossover/Length 4930mm (194.1 inches) x Width 1840mm (72.4 inches) x Height 1540mm (60.6 inches)
    Estate/Length 4930mm (194.1 inches) x Width 1880mm (74 inches) x Height 1620mm (63.8 inches)
    Sedan/Length 5030mm (198 inches) x Width 1890mm (74 inches) x Height 1470mm (57.9 inches)

     Comparing the sports and crossover, the overall length is 220mm shorter, the overall width is shorter by 40mm, and the overall height is 10mm higher. Although it is said that it is "wide in spite of being short", this kind of dimension is often seen in overseas manufacturers.

     Take the Porsche Macan, for example. The Crown Sports is a size that hits quite a bit with the Macan.

     Crown Sport and Porsche Macan are quite close in overall length and width, but Crown Sport is 74mm lower in overall height. When you compare the two, the Macan looks like a big head."

    Love how they start comparing the Crown Sport to the Macan, then a Jaguar, BMW X4, Audi Q5, etc. but they are obsessed with the Sport. I'm thinking the Crown sisters are going to be some expensive rides. The Sport is going to be a big vehicle somewhere between the Rav4/NX and the Lexus RX in length and width but somewhere between the Lexus UX and Toyota C-HR in height. I can only imagine the C-pillars on that. The Estate is almost the same length as the Highlander but nowheres near as high as the Rav4 or NX. I'm guessing no third row unless in Japan.

    Might be a hiccup or a start of something more serious, but October Production plans are out and the Crown will be affected for a couple of Saturdays in October. Mostly Rav4 (and Harrier) and Rav4 Prime production is affected by suspension of production for a couple of weeks. But you know how these things start, once it's a couple of days then more like a couple of weeks along the way as Toyota adjusts to a lack of ______________ (fill in the blank).

    The all autpmakes shortfall of over a million cars this year is becoming obvious. Every time I drive to the recycling facility past car sellers row and see no new cars on any lots (Ford, GM, Nissan, Toyota, Honda are my sample size) it is more and more obvious. Good news is used car prices are dropping from insane levels. Bad news is new cars are climbing. And other news is Tesla backlog is easing in some areas.

    Comparatively speaking 41 mpg combined is pretty high compared to other AWD SUVs and Crossovers. Highest is the RAV4 Hybrid at 40 mpg combined, Venza and 2022 Lexus NX350h are at 39 mpg combined. As far as sedans are concerned the Avalon Hybrid XLE beats it at 44 mpg combined, but the Avalon Hybrid is not AWD and the Crown is 4.1 inches (104mm) higher. The Crown XLE has 19" wheels versus the Avalon Hybrid XLE at 17". Something tells me the Crown's weight, with its upscale interior and amenities, will easily beat the Avalon and may even match or beat the RAV4 Hybrid.

    And that makes sense. According to bestcarweb.jp the WLTC rating for the 2.5L Hybrid AWD is a rather generous 22.4km/L (53 mpg) while the 2.4L Turbo Hybrid WLTC rating was 15.7km/L (37mpg) using premium gas. They didn't indicate whether this was for a combined rating which is a whopping 29% difference. Normally WLTC is around the 8% difference decrease to EPA. WLTC is calculated for 4 different modes, suburban (motorway), urban, extra-urban and freeway. But if we use the EPA of 41mpg (17.4km/L) combined we should get 11.2km/L or 26mpg for the EPA combined. If we use the difference between the WLTC we get 30% difference between the two WLTC which then equals about 29mpg EPA for the 2.4L Turbo Hybrid.

    Page 3 has the WLTC ratings.
    By the way Japan has recorded 25000 orders for the Crown Crossover in its first month which is a little more than the 3,500 first month orders normally seen for first model year orders. So it looks quite popular, over there. That being said I've watched from more than one YouTube reviewer, you have to see it in person to appreciate it.

    Japan only uses three phases of WLTP. They skip the freeway on the grounds their average speeds are lower.

    Crown's Essence to Live on in the 16th Generation

    Background about the development of the 16th generation of the Crown. One of the key moments in the development was Akio-san asking after they made final decisions on the Crossover was, "how about making a sedan, too?". Thus began the Crown Family.

    And it's a bigger change in Japan given that their sedans are much more conservative than our versions here. (Mostly thinking about the Corolla. I think the current gen Camry is the same on both side of the Pacific)
