    hi guys,

hoping someone who has worked on brake pedals before can help me out here. I have this really annoying rattle that comes from the brake pedal itself (it is NOT the brakes, they are brand new OEM toyota pads and the rotors/calipers are perfect, the sound is coming from the interior here, 100% sure of that because I can prevent the noise w/ my foot).

The brake pedal is kind of loose, so I was wondering if there was a way to tighten it. I tried to feel around to see if anything was loose and it seems the jiggle happens at the connection where the brake pedal itself connects to the whole mechanism, if that makes sense :p. When I tried to I feel around, there seems to be a pin held in place by a cotter pin, and that is where it is loose and jiggles a bit.

Is there a way to deal with this? It's annoying af. I thought maybe an O-ring behind the cotter pin could help but I can't see that being a long term solution.

I'll have to look at the parts break down but I believe that pedal is connected up there to the pedal rack with bushings that could possibly wear and all that so you're saying if you grab your foot pedal for the brake with your hand you can move it side to side jiggle it and literally feel slopping it? Is this correct so then with the car sitting there at idle you're saying that pedal moves the slop that the pedal has in it rattles click click click click click or something along those lines yeah not cool I don't have that slop in my brake pedal and I have a $300,000 plus mile '09 generation 2 I know in my Corollas because I've changed a couple of cars from automatic to five speed back in my '75 to 83 rear wheel drive Corollas that whole pedal cluster unbolts and it has bushings on a long bolt that the pedals literally mount to so you can slide that bolt out and add a clutch pedal and spacer and of course then you've got to poke a hole in the firewall for the master cylinder and all that but that's not the point there are bushings there that could possibly wear but my God in an automatic car I see that is being quite the rare event what I would wonder is is your engine misfiring real bad but I would imagine a person would notice that before they noticed the pedal wobbling but I believe they're bushings that mount that pedal to the assembly I'll have to go look at the parts breakdown but I would be shocked if there's not.

we're talking about a 2013 prius with 90k miles that's very well maintained. there is definitely not a misfire or any mechanical issues.

the brake pedal is quite literally just wobbling like it's loose. it's not an extreme amount or something, it's very minor. just enough to make a noise that will annoy me. it literally feels like i should be able to just tighten a screw but i cant get my face down in there to see anything, and im having a hard time finding a diagram of the part itself

i found this on ebay this morning, not 100% if it's an accurate OEM prius part but i'm gonna try to feel around for that nut (pause) to see if it can be tightened

Get down on your knees or what have you and look up at your brake pedal assembly you see how it's mounted there should be a bolt a nut there that you might be able to loosen or tighten see if that takes the slop out It may just be loose I don't know how the newer cars work in that area I haven't really reached up there. My 2013 I'll be here in a few minutes and I'll go take a look but most pedal assemblies are made pretty close to the same it's just bent steel into this cage looking affair that bolts up to the bosses that are built in the unit construction for it.

Here's the diagram. If the wobble is at the push rod pin, I would first check if that connection was properly assembled. Is the spring in the correct place (left of the pedal)? Is it stretched out, perhaps?
