P0AA6 - Drives Fine

    Hi All! I’d really appreciate any advice.

    I had my battery replaced by Green Bean Battery in April of this year. I live in Hawaii, so this car is my “mainland” car that lives at my mother’s house in Alabama. I didn’t want to invest a ton of money into a Toyota Battery (quoted at 5k for a replacement). Green bean replaced and all was well, I drove it all Summer with no issues. My mom drives it one or twice a week around to make sure all is well and we maintain the warranty with Green Bean.

    Earlier this month, the “Check Hybrid System” Comes on. She mentions the brakes are making a lot of noise, so I have it towed in to the shop because I was worried about the brakes being safe, but the car is driving normally. The shop says, the rotors and pads needs to be replaced - total of $800 with the diagnostic (100) and tow (87). I say, no, just get the diagnostic report and we will replace the rotors when we come back. The shop ends up doing the rotors without authorization - just calls and says come get your car. Irritating, but I digress.

    The codes returned were P0AA6 2 times. I am still waiting to hear back from Green Bean, but from what I am reading they need detailed codes to know if this is a battery fault or somewhere else. So, I am back to square one, but already out extra $$.

    My thought process is if it just a leaking cell, then it makes sense that the car would continue to function rather normally. Maybe wait until they all die and get the replace hybrid battery code that would guarantee a replacement from green bean? or Spend $400 on a diagnostic at the local Toyota dealership?

    What would y’all do in this situation? If anyone is lower AL is interested in buying a Prius with brand new rotor and brake pads, let me know. :)

    i don't think i'd want to drive it without at least taking a gander inside the battery to make sure the modules aren't swollen, which could possibly lead to a fire.

    If you can find anybody who has any scan tool that can retrieve the INF codes for the P0AA6, maybe it will cost less than $400 to do that, and then you will have a better idea where the isolation fault is.

    The car won't really continue to function rather normally with a P0AA6 detected. If you are driving when the ECU detects the problem, you'll be allowed to finish the trip, but not to start the car again. Sometimes people just keep clearing the code to see how far they can push it.

    Depending on how the isolation fault was formed, there could be others on the way to forming at the time P0AA6 is set for the first one detected. That's the best time to chase down the problem, because if a second isolation fault develops elsewhere in the system while the first one still exists, that will complete a circuit.

    Why not call greenie and have them fix it? They're suppose to have such a great warranty....
    It won't cost you anything....

    Whether the INF code is 612 or not will be a quick indication of how interesting it should be to the Green Bean folks.

    Maybe they'll do a scan for that without charge, and tell you what it was, if it wasn't 612?

    Thanks, I guess Green Bean was able to confirm it was code 612. They just replaced the Battery!

    ***UPDATE***

    I submitted the codes to Green Bean and they approved me for a new battery within a week. I am not sure how they knew the subcode, but maybe they just approved it assuming it was 612, and then confirmed when they got out there. Either way, it was a super easy process with Green Bean, and can say that I absolutely recommend them. They could have made me get the subcode 612 from a shop before they'd even come out. But they didn't! Great company.

    I bought the lifetime guarantee when I bought the original replacement and they said that would stay in place with no extra charges.

    I would bet it's a common thing for their batteries....
    They are used batteries. They match the better ones and probably use the Prolong system
    the balance them out. But since they are used, you never really know how long they will last...

    At least it didn't cost you anything, but time.
