Upgraded UX 300e gets Range Upgrade to 450km WLTP

    The Lexus UX 300e is small BEV SUV sold only in Western Europe since 2020. It was initially sold with a 54.3kWh battery and Toyota has upgraded the 2023 model to use a newly designed 72.8kWh (34% increase) battery. The range increased from 315km (196 miles) by 40% to 450km (280 miles) on 17 inch wheels using WLTP. The UX 300e is based on the UX 250h which is slightly bigger than the C-HR, which it shares the same TNGA platform, but smaller than the RAV4 (and Prius or Prius Prime). Even though it is classified as a SUV it is only about 2 inches taller than the Prius and, yes, the Prius has more cargo space. It is popular in Europe and has a higher sales volume than the entire Prius family.

    It still retains the same FWD only 150kW (201hp) motor setup as well as the CHAdeMO DC charging. It is unknown if they retained the same 6.6kW AC charging or the controversial (at least here :LOL:) air-cooling system they had for the original 54.3kWh battery.

    Wait. An increase to 72.8kWh and still only 450km WLTP? I guess that must be the gross capacity and the net capacity is closer to 65kWh?


    Edit: Hmm, this capacity is suspiciously identical to the bZ4X's CATL battery. It must be net capacity then. Oye. Less range than the bZ4X FWD on Panasonic battey.

    Forgot the link. :oops::whistle: Right, if you assume the same efficiency as the bZ4X. They also claim 16.7kWh/100km (167Wh/km) which does not make sense because they would need a 75kWh+ battery at 100% to get to 450km. That makes it much less efficient than the bZ4X which is 143.2Wh/km with the same motor and a much larger vehicle. :cautious: I'm like rereading it over and over to see if I'm not calculating that correctly.

    Edit: If I go with your 65kWh it would be closer to 144.4Wh/km unless Lexus is using air-cooling and they derated the battery capacity even more.

    Re-edit: to clarify efficiency statement about battery capacity.

    I think it's net. The bZ4X says 72.8kWh net.

    Yeah it could be using older motors/inverters (e.g. Gen 3 Prius motors and inverters instead of the newer Gen 4 Prius).

    Ha ha yeah I just forgot to put net in there. Wonder if they are using the efficiency numbers from the older model with the 54.3kWh battery, which is terrible as well. Still no way can they get to 450km at 16.7kWh/100km with a net 72.8kWh battery. More like 436km range. Weirder still, its WLTP which means it's an official number.

    It'll be under 400km EPA if it were to be tested here (or at best, a bit over 400km like the bZ4X).

    Carbuzz came out with the same update and postulated whether it would show up in the NA market in its new 72.8 kWh configuration. Spoiler alert, no, because it would be facing some stiff competition.

    They are quite correct about it not coming to the states. They would have to change the current CHAdeMO DC charger to CCS and get rid of the separate AC charger like it is on the current UX 300e. Both chargers are also located on the rear quarter panels, AC on the passenger side and DC on the driver side, and would have to move to the front like it is on the bZ4X FWD and RZ 450e, which, interestingly, have slightly smaller batteries, 71.4kWh. It's kind of an odd duck in that it straddles the line between PHEVs and EVs. The UX 250h hybrid version in Europe outsells it by 5 to 1. Like all Lexus PHEVs, it uses run flat tires.

    We dropped the UX250 in Canada and we only have the hybrid now.

    Well the new Outlander PHEV keeps the CHADeMO outlet but it's a PHEV so it's not as critical. For 50kW, CHADeMO or CCS is fine but any greater and I'd stick to CCS because 100kW CHADeMOs are ultra rare.

    Sounds like it might be an upgraded Lexus Hybrid System UX 250h. The article states it is getting the newer 2.0L (it already has a 2.0L but only puts out 181 hp total), but I'm betting they get rid of the 7 hp (5 kW) rear motor and replace it with the 40 hp (30 kW) e-Axle found in the Corolla Cross Hybrid. The horsepower difference between the old and new engine is about 4 hp, but better gas mileage and more oomph from the battery to get to the 196 hp found in the Corolla Cross Hybrid.

    The 196 bhp from the 2.0 hybrid has nothing to do with the rear axle. The front wheel drive Corolla 2.0 hybrid has the same power output for the 2023 model year.

    Thanks. You're correct, both the FWD and AWD versions of the Corolla Cross have the same amount of power from the battery. I'm sure Lexus will swap out the 5kW rear motor for the 30kW to give it their Lexus Driving Signature DIRECT4 but the power from the battery won't change. Not sure if the US will be getting a FWD UX 300h, but probably AWD only according to this article since we'll be getting only the AWD version of the Corolla Cross Hybrid:

    Probably, just a Lexus version. Lexus doesn't have any other vehicle powered by the 2.0L, just the UX and they're probably doing it to expand the UX family like the RX. Now they'll have the Performance model.

    I should probably qualify this statement a bit. Lexus does not have another vehicle that uses the 2.0L NA (naturally aspirated) engine. The RC 300 and the IS 300 sedan also uses the 2.0L but they are turbo charged variations.
