Started up the Prius and had about a 5 second mild rough start. Didn’t sound like it was misfiring and I’m well aware of how severe the knocking can get so hopefully not head gasket. We have had some very cold night the past few nights and I turned my Prius off mid way through a warm up just to move cars around in the driveway. Didn’t drive for two days. Hopefully it was just moisture built up in the IM or somewhere in the combustion area. What worries me the most was during the rough start I got some white smoke out of exhaust until it smoothed out.

Coolant level has not changed, I monitor all fluids weekly.
    Current: 2012 165k

here’s what was done at 140k:
    New updated IM
    new egr valve
    OCC
    Cleaned Cooler
    Coolant drain and fill
New water pump (changed coolant twice)
    Transaxle fluid changed

If it was a hg allowing coolant into the cylinder it will repeat frequently when cold.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant was I moved cars around and while it was in the warming up cycle I turned off the car and didn’t drive for two days until I started it back up and got the rough start.

@Grit noticed/quoted that, and yeah, I had shake on cold start after doing that, once, way back when, maybe around 25~40k kms. Short run and shut down, then start again a couple of days later, "can" trigger the shakes

Still, 140K miles before the EGR was first cleaned, could be the HG.

My egr circuit was actually relatively clean. All the egr ports in the IM were not clogged at all. The valve was stuck and the stopper or whatever it’s called was mashed. The cooler was pretty clogged but not fully blocked. I think I caught it right on time. We shall see tomorrow on another cold startup.

^ The stopper’s this? Took this pic 2~3 days back, during second cleaning. Car has 96k kms.

By not allowing the engine to warm up, and finish, and turn off on its own,
it's leaving some fuel in the cylinders.
This is a common issue, and I take it normal for a 3rd Generation Prius.
Mine had done that a few times, then I read about it here on Prius Chat.
Since I let it finish its thing and shut off on its own, I have not had that problem.

@ASRDogman Would that also explain the white smoke from the exhaust? That’s my main worry. It did have a strong smell, not a sweet coolant smell but did have a different smell from exhaust. Not sure how to describe it.

White smoke usually means coolant is getting into the exhaust.
I guess it could be possible since the engine doesn't warm up, but enough
to cause condensation, and thats' your white smoke.....

If this was a one off occurrence then no sweat. In another thread, a feller posted the same incident, you should have red the scared straight posts that it was possibly a blown gasket and get the egr cleaning ASAP and then a possible lithium battery needed with a referral code to use. Man if I was the original poster I’d lost a lot of sleep on the other post!

No rough start this morning. Took on a 500 mile road trip back home with no problems. Thanks everyone.

Yes, except when it means when someone mistook water condensation (fog) from exhaust from normal combustion for smoke---typically when ambient temperature is cool or humidity is high or both.

It's crazy that this only really happens in our cars because of the 13:1 compression ratio. Even though the atkinson cycle lessons it, they can't handle extra liquid of any sort whether gasoline or water. Typically a situation like that in a low compression motor the engine would just want to die until it squeezed it out and then it would keep going in my experience. Definitely try to get the car up to temp every time you start it to avoid that or try a catch can connected to the intake or a vent can not connected to the intake, they both help. Every knock is another point...

Dont turn it off prematurely anymore then. Wait for it to fully warm-up and shut the ICE on its own. Shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes.

3rd gen Prius has around 15 sec “grace”, before engine kicks in. If I’m say backing out car from garage to driveway, I’m cognizant of that, work fast, while counting seconds in my head, shut down at ten.

If I’m going to need more time, trick number two: plug in the block heater, for at least an hour beforehand, preferably two. Then, when starting the car, immediately push EV button, and verify it worked, that the green EV icon lit up. The block heater usage raises coolant temp enough that the car will permit EV.

If, for whatever reason, you misjudge and engine does kick in, yeah let it run till it shuts down.
