I have a 2008 Prius that recently brushed the curb with the front right (passenger) side tire. As a result there is a little road rash on the rim, but the tire and alignment (control arm, etc) all appear undamaged. Driving the vehicle above 20 mph leads to a noise that appears to be coming from a central front area where the CV axle and transaxle meet (most likely not the wheel bearing, replaced a few months ago, wheel is solid, and noise does not come from that location).

As a result I am currently replacing the passenger CV Axle and was able to remove the original Toyota axle. It appears intact and unbent. There was no fluid leaking and the original axle seal appears intact. I am going to replace it since it is 14 years old.

This is where I would appreciate someone's help and guidance. Upon inspecting the seal in the transaxle there was a spring clamp (spring in a ring shape) laying directly behind it. It might go around the seal from behind and was accidently removed when the CV axle was taken out. I am having the most difficult time identifying it, in the maintenance guide or the Toyota parts diagrams.

Please help me identify it and its purpose.

Yes, shaft seals are built that way. The new seal will have that.

Good job noticing it, and not having it loose inside your tranny!

Thank you so much for replying and your reassurance. This is a tough job on jack stands. I am not sure if I would have the fortitude to have to redo it.

That is called a "garter spring". The axle seal has a lip that is towards the inside of the transmission. That spring is supposed to around the "outside" of the lip (which is on the "in" side of the seal- confusing, isn't it?). It keeps tension on the seal lip to help it "seal" fluid in and dirt/water out.

If you look at a new seal you can see it. That spring can be knocked loose when installing the seal with a hammer and driver tool (large socket). So I pack the lip and spring recess on the seal with grease or petroleum jelly to help keep things in place.
