5000 mile maintenance - too much oil added?

    I had my Prius serviced (oil/filter change and rotate tires...) at Piercey Toyota in San Jose about a week ago and my mileage has dropped from 49+ to 44-46. I thought there might not be enough oil. It turns out there is too much, the dipstick registers about 1/2" above the top "dot". Is it possible that this is effecting my mileage? Should I have the dealership remove some of the oil? or replace it all with the right amount? Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    assuming it was your first tire rotation since you're at 5k miles, chances are your tires are going through a second break-in period. also check your pressures, dealers tend to decrease psi to factory spec.

    if you're really picky and want to go back to the dealership, go ahead and do so, but i suspect it'll be a waste of your time. we have not yet found any solid reason why .5 inch over the full mark could cause decreased mpg. but i know others will tell you different...

    I had my first oil change a week ago because "maintenance required" was flashing. Then I changed it, but the flashing didn't stop. Later it turned into being on constantly. I freaked out when all this happened and added more oil to the car, and stopped when it was at "too full". I had to find out from this site that it was part of an automatic system linked to the odometer. I didn't see anything about resetting to shut this off in the manual. I wish I had read PriusChat before I did that... but oh well. Today they drained out the extra quart.

    Hey Galaxee and Tap, Thanks! I'll check the tire pressure tonight, and I'm going to see if my mileage remains "low" before going back to the dealership...

    I don't have the owner's manual with me, but I am positive that I have seen the maintenance light resetting procedure explained there.

    HOW TO TURN OFF THE FLASHING MAINTENANCE LIGHT.

    1. Turn on the power.
    2. Make sure the ODO/TRIP meter is in the odometer position (Not trip).
    3. Turn everything off.
    4. While pushing the     ODO/TRIP button, turn on the power button to IG-ON or READY.
    5. The reminder light will flash until reset is completed.
    6. Release the ODO button.
    7. The ODO/TRIP meter displays zeros for a second then displays your normal readings.
