I just bought a new Prius. Can I buy the 7yr/100,000miles warranty from Priuschat for less than the MSRP? Also, is there is a time limit when I should buy it, or can I do it anytime before my basic 3 yr warranty run out?

    Thanks.

I also just bought a 2006 Prius and agonized over buying the extended warranty. A toyota technician program teacher, I know, read the extended warranty and said most of the Prius's hybrid parts are covered by the 100,000 mile warranty. His opinion was "It doesn't seem to pay to get the extended warranty (6/100.000 mi = $1300 or 7/ 75,000 = $1200) I'm listening to him. Hope we're both right!!!.

How much were they charging you? I am picking my car up tonight and I paid through the dealer $980 for it. I also paid $399 for the lifetime oil changes. Can you tell me what kind of gas I should use for my prius?

Use regular gas - it says so in the manual, and many threads here explain that higher octane gas will actually give you LOWER MPG - the higher octane gas is designed for cars that NEED that higher octane to prevent engine knock. If they used regular gas, they'd get engine knock AND they'd get lower MPG.

If you use regular gas or higher octane, you won't get engine knock. So go for the recommended regular gas and the higher MPG.

I got the extended warranty through this forum, and I paid somewhere around $970-990 -don't remember the exact price- it's the 100,000/7 year warranty from Toyota Financial. You can buy it anytime before your car is 3 years old or reaches 36,000 miles, whichever is sooner. You can buy the same warranty from any Toyota dealer except those in Hawaii or the Southeast Region of the US - Southeast is separate from Toyota US, as is the Hawaii 'region'. Most people seem to agree that the price through the Prius Chat forum is a very good price - well below the MSRP, and even lower than MANY Toyota dealers charge!

    Buy your extended warranty now.
Buy your extended warranty on PriusChat. You won't find a lower price!
You need it now, because it also gives you towing coverage.
You will be reimbursed for all towing costs.
You will be reimbursed up to $50 a day (for up to 5 days) for car rental.
You will be reimbursed up to $100 a day (for up to 5 days) for food & lodging.

If you're lucky, you will never need these services. Why gamble?

Like insurance, if you never use it, it may seem like a waste of money. But if you need it, it's good to have it.

I, like most people, get offers to buy extended warranties on many items we buy. I always buy a warranty on big ticket items. I am money way ahead. You will not use warranty for everything you buy, but chances are that one will go out and justify the cost of them all. This is not the 1st car that I've had with a warranty. I am particular about what the warranty covers. I would have to think long and hard before I bought Toyota's gold coverage.

I also suggest buying the warranty thru Troy @ the PC link. Saves you a ton of money.

I have a new Highlander hybrid and shopped around for an extended warranty after the dealer wanted about $2000.00 for the 7ry/100K/0-ded Toyota warranty. The best prices I was quoted were from Troy ($990) at Greenfield Toyota (CT) and Jake Sacks ($970) at Crown Toyota (Lawrence, KS). I went with Crown because it is closer to my home and their warranty rep was very responsive. I didn't know about the warranty program offered through PriusChat at the time, but it seems to be in line with the other two and does provide support for PriusChat.

They cover for ACCIDENTS. The towing/car rental extra coverage with the extended warranty is for car breakdowns, same with the food/lodging if you break down while away from home on a road trip.

What's up with the Southeast Region of the US and extended warranties? I'm close to deciding on whether or not to purchase an extended warranty (33,000 on my '05) so was reviewing the warranty related posts. I live in North Carolina so this reference to the Southeast Region has me wondering what makes it different and what issues I need to be concerned with regarding the purchase of an extended warranty.

The Southeast region has an independent importer/distributor as do the Gulf States region and Hawaii. In the rest of the United States Toyota Motor Sales, USA, is the distributor. Toyota Financial Services which issues the extended warranty sold through this site is a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation as is Toyota Motor Sales, USA.

My additional research on this subject indicates that Southeast regional dealers sell extended warranties issued by a non-Toyota company. I'm unclear though as to how this pertains to the purchase of the extended warranty offered through PC. Being unable to purchase the PC offered warranty would indicate that extended warranties issued by Toyota Financial Services would be worthless if the owner relocated to the Southeast. I can't imagine that being the case. Can someone clarify?

Southeast region dealers honor the Toyota Financial Services warranty. This issue has been extensively discussed in this thread:
