noob here, but I’m trying to learn as much as I can.

I have a 2010 Prius, it’s paid off and I would love to keep it going for another 100k miles (currently ~180k) at least.

After about 1000 miles, my oil level drops a quart at least. It will be empty by 5000 miles. You can see all the black exhaust on my rear bumper as well.

My question is, which part of the engine is most likely the point of failure? Does anyone have experience with this issue?

    Thank you!

There is a whole thread in Priuschat about this issue. I would type in the search bar "head gasket issues" and you will find a library of information. Short answer is yes, there is a fix. Long answer is how you go about fixing it.

i assume it's the rings. a quart every 1,000 miles is still 400 miles above toyotas threshold, believe it or not.

have you cleaned the egr circuit?

some people have had success with engine flus products, others not so much

It is a very common fault on 2010-2014 Prius- the oil control rings on the pistons get carbon build up and "stick". That allows more oil into the combustion chamber.

Around 2015 Toyota redesigned the pistons and rings that reduces this problem.

It can happen to any engine that's poorly maintained - not changing the oil on schedule.

You can try to put Seafoam (or something similar) in your crankcase. But with that much of oil burning in your car, I am not optimistic. The ultimate solution is probably oil ring / engine block replacement.

Why read and try to hunt down relavant info when you can have it served on your plate in front of you?!

Try BG hybrid repair kit. There’s 3 things in it, fuel cleaner which you dump in your gas-tank with full tank of gas. 2nd is engine flush which you dump in crankcase before oil change, but you’ll need to run the engine in maintenance mode for 15 minutes so the engine flush can do its cleaning. The last bottle is the oil additive which you add in the crankcase with your new oil.

You’ll basically just need to do an oil-change but with extras like maintenance mode, and additive on top of regular oil you use. Good luck.

Maybe because the search functions are often quite poor. Better to google Priuschat + key words

    ^^^ This.

To the OP. Regarding the Seafoam and other solvent type solutions to unstick the piston rings... by the time your engine is consuming oil, there is a chance that the stuck rings have led to scoring of the cylinder walls.

Even if you are able to free the piston rings of the carbon buildup, the scored cylinder walls will still allow oil into the combustion process.

At about what mileage did the excessive oil guzzling begin?

    Probably about 150,000 miles

Yes, scored cylinder walls caused by low tension rings and pistons. It is a design fail on these engines. Toyota was replacing pistons and rings free as long as you were losing one quart per 1200 miles but that program ended at 60,000 miles.

The only sure fix is a rebuilt engine that includes Toyota new design pistons and rings. However, most people at 200k usually just keep filling the oil up until the engine blows.

The additives will not fix it. It will just cost you money that is better spent on a rebuilt engine.

Oil consumption is quart or quarter of min-max scale per 1000miles? If later, you are fine. Just change oils e.g. every 5000miles and have your egr cleaned and enjoy the ride.

i have same situation and about 135kmiles on the clock. I use 98 because i believe it shall burn cleaner and hopefully the rings keep cleaner.

Sounds straightforward to me, that he’s losing a quart of oil every 1000 miles.

I thought ”empty by 5000miles” mean oil is at min mark. But he obviously meant empty empty. Silly me
