cleaning the hybrid hv battery fan is very important to make sure that the traction battery stays within optimal operating temperature and thus optimal fuel economy

here's a video that explains about cleaning the hybrid battery fan in toyota prius cars

I've looked at ours a couple of times now. Good to acquaint yourself with it, eliminate one of the unknowns.

The ductwork shown in the video is for second gen I think; third gen is a little different, but similar principal.

Yes its 2nd gen ducts but they're similar to 3rd gen almost the same principle

Here are some photos that show it. The cover for the battery intake is on the right side of the rear seat and is secured by one bolt. Remove the cover and cut floor furnace filter to fit. Place the filter and reinstall the cover. I have replaced the filter a couple of times and it does get dirty.

i thought someone pointed out a finer plastic grid behind the grille in the past, but that's why i added the question mark.

Maybe at the mid-life upgrade, 2013 and onward?

On our 2010, my latest rendition of filter is to put a piece of residential bug screen in behind the grill. The screen has a strong bow to it, so I put it against the (concave) inside of the grill, purposely bowing away, then pulled it in to close/flush contact with a couple of loops of black thread.

Thank you, that's a pretty good mod. since the filter will prevent dust and bigger objects from going into the hv fan vents (especially if kids through stuff in there :)

I cleaned my fan today at 55.5k miles. I started by not without removing the bottom seat. Easy to get access to fan assembly. Detached the plugs and the 3 bolts and pulled it out. I went ahead and removed the 3 screws that hold the fan housing together and soaked the blades in windex. Put it in a bowl so it only soaked the blades (motor on top). Then sat it in the Hot 100 degree heat we had today for 20 minutes. Went to put it all back together and thats when I had problems. Believe it or not, its easier to put everything back together with the bottom seat cushion out. Total time, 2 hours. Next time it will be less than an hour. Blades had only grey soot on them. No hair. Nothing clogged. Due to me sweating like a dog, I didn't take photos. Sorry.

One other thing, on my 2015, it already has a nice screen door type mesh on it. It was dirty, so it appears to work good.

How often is this needed? I have over 100K but no issues. I know to keep the inside of the car clean and not obstruct the vent.
