Vapor-recovery nozzles (the ones with the bellows arrangement) need to be well seated against the fill pipe. Doing that should reduce burping.

Pump nozzles do wear out. Maybe you found one of them with that 3 gallon "fill"?

Otherwise try not to stress. The bladder minimizes hydrocarbon emissions, and that is a good thing.

Thanks everyone for the responses and advice and for as long as I own this car, I will try my best to adapt. But, I have to tell you, it still feels weird. I used to own a Honda Insight. It had a regular fuel tank and was an "ULEV".
The difference between ULEV and "near zero" emissions I don't know. So maybe I'm just spoiled... I used to drive up to any gas station, using any pump, any nozzle, and refuel when I was down to a quarter tank or less. and I could depend on the fact that the fuel would go into the tank and I could fill it. Period. So now,
I have this Prius. different animal. Granted, all the other features on this car might make the average person willing to accept the "design flaw" on the fuel tank. But me? I'm not 100% convinced. Is it really expecting too much of Toyota to put out a car without this quirky problem? They did up to 2004, evidently... I want to challenge them to be close to zero - heck - even zero all together, on emissions, but ALSO have a sensible fuel tank that doesn't act all hinky on me.

Same car same year same month of delivery. I love this car and have been very lucky and live in Fla so don't see the cold but did have my first episode of the burp last fill up.Click,click,click.....what the hell??...than a gallon of gas shoots out.So your not alone. I guess since everyone is not having this issue there's no marching in the streets. We don't march anymore. If the present President we have doesn't make you march nothing will I guess. We are all overloaded and dumbed down. But, in fact as far as I can tell our car has 2 really funky problems. One is the out of the blue air trapped in the gas tank and the other is the oh my god stinky ac system. But I guess its because the car is so cool otherwise we/me tend not to freak out about 1 & 2.

No...the seating of the pump I don't think has nothing to do with it. I have been going to the same gas station..same pump since I bought the car. Perfect test platform for your theory. Never ever an issue. Not one problem. One day...gas explosion. It warned me though. Constant click off. I know now when it does that watch out.Like a huge air bubble trapped in the tank. Same brand gas. Same pump. Same volume of residual gas.I believe its not a bad design but an intermittent faulty component in the fuel system. Recently someone posted a complete explanation & diagram of the fuel system and its extremely complicated with many components and valves. If it was just the bladder everyone in freezing climes would be having a non stop nightmare getting fuel. There not. When I had my first episode it was 79 outside.

My 2007 Prius taking only less than 3 gallons even when the gauge is down to one pip! I have to go to get gas everyday! There should be some idea to expand this bladder before filling up gas, so at least five gallon of gas you can get per visit to gas station.
