    Good News!
U.S. FDA proposes shift to annual COVID vaccine shots | Reuters

Jan 23 (Reuters) - The U.S. health regulator on Monday proposed one dose of the latest updated COVID-19 shot annually for healthy adults, similar to the influenza immunization campaign, as it aims to simplify the country's COVID-vaccine strategy.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also asked its panel of external advisers to consider the usage of two COVID vaccine shots a year for some young children, older adults and persons with compromised immunity. The regulator proposed the need for routine selection of variants for updating the vaccine, similar to the way strains for flu vaccines are changed annually, in briefing documents ahead of a meeting of its panel on Thursday.
    . . .

This easily transmitted virus spawns variants like influenza. This is a good defense.

    wonderful!

i wonder if they should begin with a certain age group or immune compromised like the flu shot

I read there is discussion about 2 / year of young children, older adults, those with immune issues ....

Less air play is going to the studies about possible links to other health issues from the vacs.
    humm, wonder why .....

*Any* vaccination probably carries an increased risk for vulnerable groups. Which links to other health issues do you mean?

Regarding air play: a responsible broadcaster has to limit their reporting to facts rather than speculation. so this might explain why conspiracy theories and the related appeals to emotion aren't presented on the evening news.

We're used to seeing discourse go a certain way in our echo chambers on Twitter or Facebook, which doesn't always reflect reality. This is how we end up with people dosing themselves with Ivermectin:LOL:

Happily vaccination side effects are studied. Where there is potentially a severe side effect, diagnostic and treatment information are included with the vaccine.

they've even halted usage until more data is gathered. there will always be a minuscule percentage who get seriously sick and even some deaths. it's unfortunate, but the alternative is much worse

Satisfied customer here, so far (five doses still to go).

It wasn't offered to me for my first dance with the virus, last spring. At least I'd had the first booster before the holidays, and had an uncomplicated case, and got my voice back in a couple weeks.

This time, doc said paxlovid available, started before even losing my voice, felt improved within hours of the first dose, felt downright good after a night's sleep.

Was able to detect a bit of rebounding toward the tail of each dose period, before taking the next one, but less with each successive dose.

I'm assuming the foul taste the stuff creates in my mouth may be a proxy for the plasma concentration; it's always mostly gone by a couple hours before the next dose.

Honestly, I feel good enough right now I could be that guy who goes and leaves the remaining doses untaken, but I don't really want to run an unregulated gain-of-function project, so I guess I won't.

If I remember right, around the time of my first case when Paxlovid wasn't offered, things like monoclonal antibodies were what the more-important people were getting, but those seem to have proven a bit more variant-specific.

Paxlovid seems to be holding up better amid variants, no? It seems to target a spot on the virus's main protease that doesn't vary a lot. So far....

I was reading the very interesting several paragraphs in the information sheet about how they evaluated for the risk of resistance developing ... back in those few hours after my first dose, when reading was still about the only thing I wasn't too crabby to do.

I've had both original and booster and this year the next booster and a week later the flu. I've been self isolating mostly the entire duration, and it's become almost a habit. The misses works at a senior / retirement facility and I was double, triple careful to try not to be the cause of anymore of a cluster flux than that (senior housing ) had already turned into. Her weekly testing wasn't fun either, but luckily for both of us, neither of us had it, so far, fingers crossed ....

we finally got out after 3 years of isolation. it's pretty good here in florida, everythings outside and we wear N95's for grocery shopping and etc.
no one else is wearing masks, and the hospitals aren't overflowing. a big improvement over 2020

If this has become a meetup thread, the COVID cloud would seem to have passed. I've long wished to say so. But it's wrong for me to say because I am still 'pre'. Still doing all to avoid my week in the tunnel.

It's boring. I go out en mask and (as much as say to adjacent lungs) Do what you do.

What a weird horrible informative massive thread this has been. I started it; I had to. But the first-to-last knot remains untied.

a study was just released showing the the majority of cases are being transmitted in busy enclosed places with no fresh air ventilation.
it showed that public indoor spaces like classrooms and etc. with modernized hvac, including fresh air admission reduced transmissibility to near zero.

i don't believe you can get it outdoors, unless you were stuck in a massive crowd of people on a very still day, or close talking to someone who is contagious and spitting on you.

i have not had it yet, and still intend not to, just because of the unknown quality of my aging immune system.
i mask up in any public indoor space, don't eat indoors, and stay out of gyms movie theaters etc. but i have never worn a mask outside.
the bivalent booster is showing excellent results, and the talk of long covid in the media, while existing, is much overblown. local doc says a lot of her patients who think they have long covid are just getting older and don't want to hear it.
when we have the grandkids over, the windows are open with fans bringing in fresh air. not doing much for our carbon footprint trying to heat the house, but it's only twice a week

    Future vaccine design options:

    https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00220-z

This is how COVID changed the world. These options now exist while in 2020 they did not.

Broadly, viruses arriving to spoil humans things are now amenable to biochemical disassembly, antigen design, and re assembly into new vaccines. THIS is how COVID changed the world.

It does not mean all will be manufactured, tested, approved. and broadly publicly accepted. It does mean that a very new toolbox is full of tools.

Ten to 15 million dead, much other human cost, and extensive economic disruption - that is the price paid. From it we get a toolbox for future.

it's pretty neat stuff with a lot of potential applications.
