won't help with the problems in other research facilities around the world, but it's best to set a good example

Global biological isolation facilities (BIF) collaborate. Tightening BIF rules (and problem reporting) could help, as far as that goes.

Other pathogen research done by formal research institutions without BIF could be seen as the wild wild west. Looks loose to me.

Improved housekeeping can have good effects on those above.

Unregulated research done by hackers or bad actors might have been ignorable back when genomic engineering was hard, but now it's easy. This is the realm of clickbait. It could bite us in the butt someday. Here we have only surveillance and this potentially adds another channel to surveillance of zoonotics jumping to human hosts 'naturally'.

You see what we did here, right? Making this planet totally ours made us, lung and intestinal surface areas, a vast resource for virus, bacteria etc. to exploit. In a way it is surprising that those have not exploited more and sooner.

Hmm. Interesting things in the news now.

There's no way it was created in a lab in Wuhan , and then dropped into the population , right ?

Dang those tinfoil hat people. Dang them all to heck. It's easy to just ignore them while yelling "IT'S SCIENCE!" , but when they all smug and stuff... It's just so annoying.

As someone who would have died long ago with medical miracles, I whole-heartedly agree :)

As someone who would have died long ago with medical miracles..."

There is that. It might be less known to younger posters here how much medical technology has extended lives for those able to pay.

Broadly it is hard to imagine Human Enterprise persisting without modern medical technology. Every disease risking able-to-pay clients gets attention. Not every disease risking unable-to-pay clients gets attention. So we might be facing a problem.

What is our goal? It could be that every human born anywhere gets a chance to grow to become, at least, a consumer of goods sold from elsewhere. This is not a small goal, requiring providence of clean water, food, and energy, beyond modern medicine. A lesser goal would be to treat the next 2 billions to be born as not deserving help from rich world. It would avoid some painful investments, Presume that 'the new they' have nothing to offer, which (frankly) follows previous human planning.

There are media sources saying that it is communism or woke or other bad things to invest on behalf of the poorest to come. If you like what you hear about that, nothing I might say could move you. It would not surprise at all if PriusChat posters have interesting comments 'across the board'.

Now that COVID seems in decline, we do need a different thread to consider the role of modern medicine as a component of what should be done as 8 billion humans become 10 within 30 years.

    tochatihu,

The flip side is the aid provided by countries in the west such as the USA to the rest of the world and aid provided by wealthy individuals such as Bill Gates and his foundation-

Humanitarian Assistance | What We Do | U.S. Agency for International Development (usaid.gov)

Help save lives. Donate now. | Doctors Without Borders

Refugee and Humanitarian Assistance - United States Department of State
"USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance is the U.S. government lead for international disaster assistance, reaching tens of millions of people around the world each year with life-saving aid. On average, we respond to 75 crises in more than 70 countries each year".
"The United States is the largest single provider of humanitarian assistance worldwide. Total U.S. humanitarian assistance worldwide was nearly $13 billion in fiscal year 2021, including funding from the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance."

    Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

"The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation - the largest private body of its kind - spends billions of dollars every year on initiatives aimed at eradicating infectious diseases and reducing poverty."

That is not even discussing the tremendous outreach many religious organizations provide worldwide - the Catholic Church as just one example has multiple organizations serving and assisting with efforts to help the underserved in the world
    Catholic Relief Services (crs.org)

An unfortunate condition of life is there will always be relatively poor and underserved people.
In nature there will always be the hunter and the hunted.
Life is not fair as almost any living being can attest.
That doesn't make it right it is just the way it is.

Better to make an effort to improve yourself and help your fellow man each day rather than wallow in despair at the way things are - they will never be perfect - that is just the way life is.

No, many taxpayers can’t afford the medical care they need. Last year I paid approximately $15k out of pocket for medical care.
I know of many in my state rationing insulin because they couldn’t affor it. Some steps have been made in that area, but there are many others.
For many years, the most common cause of bankruptcy was medical costs.

Here in the USA, being a tax payer does not guarantee medical care.

    Sorry.
We'll have to agree to disagree.
I'm sorry that you had to come out of pocket for $15k in medical expenses.
I'm currently at around $5k a year out of pocket AND I'M STILL IN GOOD HEALTH and I have union insurance through Big Bell AND Tricare supplementing THAT.
I am on no prescription meds, my BMI is less than obese, and I can probably still meet USN physical fitness norms for my age group (they go out to 65+)

We have Obamacare, Medicare, Medicaid, and many MANY private and state plans, and if you think it's expensive NOW.......just wait until it's 'free.' ;)

IMHO to say that being a taxpayer in the US does not guarantee medical care is less than accurate.
