So what is the suggested engine oil for the 2023 Corolla Hybrid 1.8?

I just got 500 miles on the clock and want to get any break-in debris out of the system.

0W16 is what is in the engine from the factory.

Toyota’s opinion is on the oil filler cap. And in the owners manual.

FWIW, regardless of their stance on 0W16 being the “correct” oil, 0W20, or even 5W20/5W30, would be fine too; they’re mostly chasing n’th degree mpg stats with super thin oil.

0W20 used to be the ridiculously thin oil, lol.

I downloaded the owners manual, search the file for "oil" and "oil change", and didn't find the info. Also searched the forum for the 2023 1.8 hybrid in the Corolla.

Dealer told me 0-20, cap says 0-16.

Since it wasn't clear (at least to me), I asked here on the forum. That's the purpose of a forum. If you don't like any thread or questions, just stay away.

Needless to say, I put you on ignore.

I used 0-20 on my race bike and thought that was way too thin.

Anyways, thank you for the info. I'll go by the cap, and that asks for 0-16.

Do you know how much the 1.8 hybrid takes?

(you can download pdf from Toyota Tech Info btw, often handier than the paper manual, you can search it easily)

The 2023 Corolla Hybrid manual I downloaded form the Toyota website doesn't even have page 394. I ends at page 256.

Edit: never mind, I ran into the quick reference manual.

Yeah, the other one I downloaded was the quick references and that too doesn't have the oil info.

I'll pull up the full manual. Thanks!

This little bit of text has gone through near COUNTLESS edits, going from second gen Prius onward:

SAE 0W-8 0W-16 0w-20 5W30 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If SAE 0W-8 0W-16 0w-20 5W30 is not available, SAE 0W-16 0w-20 5w-20 10W30 oil may be used However, it must be replaced with SAE 0W-8 0W-16 0w-20 5W30 at the next oil change.

    You get a little jaded...

    Well, the saga continues.

    - Dealer suggested 0w20
    - Oil cap asks for 0w16
    - Manual asks for 0w8

PS: I'm in Florida, so no cold weather issues, rather hot summers.

I'd go with dealer recommendation; someone's got to bell this runaway cat.

I think you got the wrong manual too. I downloaded it for the 2023 Corolla Hybrid and on page 422 it asks for 0w16, and that matches my oil cap.

Ok, see on Toyota Tech Info there's "corolla" and "corolla hv". I downloaded the former, and the latter (HV version) has this:

    upload_2023-2-6_9-55-57.png

Maaaybe, the regular Toyota has the 2.0 liter engine, per 5th gen Prius?? Anyway, at least the oil cap and Owner's Manual are now agreeing, and the capacity at oil change is same and 3rd/4th gen Prius with the 1.8.

Dealer can be looking at their bottom line. 0w16 has not been out for long, and they could be paying more for it.

I've only noticed 0w16 in stores within the past couple of years. The first hint of 0w8 being in a Toyota outside of Japan was from photos at the Crown's reveal. Expect them all to to call for it eventually.
On the US site, the hybrid is a 1.8L, and the ICE model 2.0L. They dropped the base 1.8L ICE, and it sounds like the 2L gets better fuel economy than the old 1.8L. Changes have been made, beyond the new oil requirement.
