2006 Prius died need to sell parts

    just found out our 2006 Prius main battery needs to be replaced for $2800, along with the break pads. The dealership said they would give us $500. They said we would get more selling it as is ourselves but we have no idea how to go about it. We live in Rochester NY. Any suggestions?

    If you want to keep the car, look at getting a rebuilt battery installed. There could very likely be someone local to you that does good work. Sometimes craigslist has rebuilders advertising. Call a couple local repair shops and see if they have any recommendations for battery repairmen.

    I don't advertise, but I've been doing them locally for $250 + $30 per module. Rarely do more than 3 modules need replacing, if so I contact owner first to discuss.

    Depends where you live, but in some regions you are required to have a special business license, such as a dismantler license to "part out."

    Probably because they could throw in a used battery and flip it back onto the market for $6,000.

    Kinda small money for a dealership, no? Dealers send old cars to auction because they don't want the hassle of warrantying them etc.

    Maybe the op meant that the dealership was going to give them a $500 trade-in value against one of their cars from stock?

    I must be poor as for me $6,000 seems like a small fortune.

    But yes, the only time I brought a car to a dealership with the idea of trading it in they offered me $500 for it. I ended up not doing that and instead sold it myself for $700 (after trying for months to get at least $1,000 out of it). That was a 2001 Chevy Astro that I never could get the CEL from flashing (manual says means chronic missfire with possibility of catalytic converter fire) back when I was shopping for a Nissan Leaf. I ended up getting a 2013 Nissan Leaf for $9,000 that one year later I sold for $7,000.

    Sometimes I just hate cars...

    Thank you ALL so much for your comments and suggestions! We greatly appreciate it and will make sure we call Browncroft Garage and othes in Rochester along with online companies. I already tried one online place that quoted $1,700 but I am kindof unsure to trust it. Should I? I must get cash when picked up, correct?

    Bob Johnson' used car manager told us he could only give us $500, without trade in. It seemed to me that parts and metal scrap would bring more. Again thanks this is a great forum and all if you are very helpfuland kind to give uour advice!.

    On-line "Peddle com" gave me the $1,700 plus quote. Are they reputable?

    Hi all, thank you for the suggestion to go to Carmax! We just sold our 2006 Prius, needing a new hybrid battery ($2800) to Carmax for $1400! We couldn't have done it without your advice!
