on the 04 and up prius's it would double beep when shifting into reverse, on the older ones u could shift into reverse while in drive, but it wouldnt work until u reach 7 mph or lower ( personal experience on both cars , ive scared my friend behind me once on a highway )

Please note that the Prius does not have an actual reverse gear, and that nothing inside the Prius drive train actually changes at any time.

What actually happens when you select Reverse on the joystick is that the computer gets the message that you want to go backwards, and the appropriate voltages are applied to MG2 to make it go backwards, while at the same time MG1 is given the appropriate voltages to make it compensate for the rpms of the gas engine.

If you are moving forward faster than the computer likes, it ignores the request from the joystick (and I believe it puts the car into neutral, which, as above, merely means that it stops feeding power to the wheels, since nothing in the Prius drivetrain is ever disengaged, which is what Neutral would mean in a conventional car.)

Thank you for that info. To be honest, this question has been weighing on my mind ever since I got my Prius. Thanks again.
