    Not the full title of the article, and it goes beyond Tesla, which is why I posted in this forum. It's an opinion piece talking about public chargers in general, and the recent government program and that funding going out. It is a bit long, but I found it interesting. It isn't a technical piece.

    Charging is a difficult business. Tesla built the largest network to sell cars. Electrify America built the 2nd largest network to pay penalties over dieselgate. Chargepoint, the largest independent network, doesn’t sell electricity at all — they sell equipment and manage the network for their widely distributed array of customers. FLO is similar. Volta doesn’t sell electricity, they give it away and put ad screens in parking lots. Only a few of the smaller companies, like EVgo, are trying to be like gasoline companies and make a profit from selling energy.

    The challenge for governments is that almost all charging must be installed on private lots, because that is where cars park, unless they park on the street. Governments are unsure of how to give subsidies to private facilities in a fair way that serves the public interest, but again, there is no choice — charging must be where people park in order to work. Perhaps loan programs would be better than grants, with the grants given to drivers on an income-based formula to pay any profits charged on the loan-funded private stations."

    If tesla can use the additional cash that the "other guys" bring to the table so that the others can use their network to expand the tesla network even further ... then it'd seem to be a win/win. That said - one of the suggestions we made to tesla (there's an app built into the car - or at least back in 2018) was to provide a "premium" spot - whereby if you knew you were on a long trip (say, over 300 mi) you could reserve (for an additional fee) the spot so that if there'd normally be a 10 or 15 minute wait to hook up ... you could jump right in. Same principal could work for "the other guys". I got the idea from the early 1970's gas crunch when one enterprising L.A. county shell station owner did something similar for the folks that didn't want to wait in a line that wrapped around the block. You'd have to pay an extra $1.00 for the privilege .... which meant paying $1.99

    ..... but back to the OP .... tesla can even profit via selling more of the SAE to Tesla adapters. After all .... in the corporate world (after factoring in equity ... green ... corporate responsibility etc issues) it's all about the Benjamin's.

    I just want Tesla to get the upgraded EV charger boards in so I can buy their CCS-1 adapter. Not because I want to use the CCS-1 disaster networks but rather every Tesla Supercharger.

    Some early speculation is that Tesla vehicles will be able to use the chargers equipped with CCS.

    Didn't know that this was part of the VW settlement. Explains why I see so many VW EVs charging at the nearby Electrify America station that opened last year. I'm guessing VW is providing free charging for its new EVs to increase sales and help recoup some of the settlement money.

    The same thinking that led to the diesel fiasco built Electrify America (EA.) At one time, early VWs could not successfully charge at an EA station. Except for the perpetual late Buzz (aka., electrified MicroBus,) their hackney EVs have no appeal to me.

    My understanding is that VW cars get X amount of free charging.
    This, IMO, is far better than open ended free charging. That just leads to congestion and poor manners.

    "3 years of included 30-minute charging sessions on the MY23 ID.4 vehicles begins upon vehicle purchase. Non-transferable. Not available for commercial use, such as ridesharing. Requires Electrify America mobile app, account, enrollment in 2023 ID.4 Charging Plan, acceptance of Plan Disclosure, and $10 deposit to pre-fund Idle Fees and charging after 30 minutes. User is responsible for Idle Fees, which apply beginning 10 minutes after charge session stops or vehicle reaches full charge. After the initial 30 minutes of each applicable session, charging continues uninterrupted at then-current Electrify America Pass pricing. There is a 60-minute wait-period between charging sessions in which you receive the 30 minutes of charging under this promotion. In the event of suspected fraud or abuse or other unforeseen events, Volkswagen of America may discontinue or modify the offer in its sole discretion. Frequent and consecutive charging can permanently decrease battery capacity, which may not be covered by your vehicle’s warranty."

    The irony is that VW EVs still can't do PnC (plug and charge) even though EA stations are capable of doing so (Mach-E owners can PnC at EA stations).

    I'm pretty sure you meant " . . . still can't do PnC . . ." which is the protocol to share a vehicle ID like the VIN from the car to the charger. Given Tesla has done this since the beginning, 'how hard can it be?' But this ranks second to abysmal charging practices at their dealers.
