I have a new to me 2007 Prius with 60K. Today the instrument cluster is blank and the MFD is not displaying data. The MFD is on but no mileage etc data is shown.

In addition, I can exit the car with the key remaining in and no alert sounds.

I know on my old Prius the instrument cluster went out because of a bad capacitor. Is this the same problem?

    Cheers.

Usually when it's not displaying the data and the miles per gallon and whatnot the display is usually out so you have a display and no updated mileage or MPG on the MFD Is this correct?

By display I mean your heads up thing that you look at for speed your gas gauge and that sort of thing usually this is out and you get blanks in the MFD where the miles per gallon is displayed and the total miles on the car on the MSD either go blank or they stop where they were I can't remember they may be showing something but they haven't updated since the display went out.

    Tombukt2,

Yes this is what is happening.

I am still open to answers but I may have found the issue. The 12V battery voltage is only 12V unloaded.
Since a lead acid should be at least 12.4V this might be it. I will change the battery and see.

    Cheers.

Well that will certainly be interesting because no matter what I've done with the voltage at the battery anyway the display problems I had were really strange I'm talking about for the mileage and gas and what have you But anyway it'll be interesting to find out.

Yes, you have another cluster that won't turn on, almost certainly due to a bad capacitor.

I highly doubt its the 12v batter, if the car starts then it's not the battery. It will even work if it's 11.5v, 12.4v is when it's fully charged. As what @mr_guy_mann posted, it's the capacitor, sometimes the car will not power off if you have this issue.

At least for now the battery appears to be the issue. I put another newer battery in and everything is working normally.

I really have to find a better answer to the 12 volt battery issue. On my first 2007 Prius the original battery lasted for almost 10 years. Then replacement batteries seemed to last less and less for total of four over 15 years.

    oem's?

could it be that you're driving less?

there again, if this one is new to you, your old one might have been drawing too much when off

tricky part about the capacitor issue is that disconnecting the battery fixes it temporarily.. for how long depends.. In my case it took like over 6 months before it went completely dead (just disconnecting battery everytime)

what kind of battery you have AGM? AGM will definitely last for over 5yrs, OEM probably will last even longer. My Camry Hybrid Panasonic 12v battery lasted 15yrs, while on bmw 530i lasted 8years. Walmart and Auto Parts store batteries last for 3-5yrs, but you could be lucky if it last for over 5yrs.
