So I broke too hard to avoid rear ending someone on the highway and hit the wall. I drove off the highway afterwards no doubt doing more damage.

the tire and rim are done for but the radiator has a hole and the little metal coolant canister is pretty dented. The car no longer wants to shift into anything but neutral. I know I can repair it myself and get her going again but I could use some help identifying what needs to be done. Pics to come. Codes p1115, p1117, p1118 and the p0420 that’s been there.

how screwed am I based off those codes ?

On an 05, probably time to retire it and use it as a parts car

That’s the thing I’ve got another 05 that was my parts car (ironically better body, but 299,999+ miles on her) I swap parts around them but because of the mileage I’ve always considered it the lesser of the two. Plus for a couple hundred dollars why junk a car that still runs and drives (yea I’m that guy). Plus I like fixing things and learning as I do…definitely not economical but for the knowledge. I better go pull my hood hybrid battery out of it before Costco tows it!

Lol yeah gotta swap the hv batteries tho. Also my gas gauge on that one started blinking all the time like when you first connect a new aux battery. Ever heard of this before?

Yup, it will do that every time. It takes a few minutes to a few days to calibrate.

I had similar damage to one of my cars, got totaled, too many parts needed to get it running and looking good again

You could certainly replace all of the broken components with enough trips to the junkyard, but what kind of shape is the body in? How about the suspension? Not only is the thermos squished, but the part of the car (big chunk of metal running front to back) where it is attached looks bent too.

Possibly low on fuel or the gauge sender in the tank is faulty- you could measure the sensor resistance and see if it's in spec per the service manual.

You probably can fix this one - but there looks to be some tweaking needed on the frame rail plus whatever happened to the suspension when the wheel hit. Could have hurt the transmission too, depending on the angle of impact.

If you have lots of time, tow the damaged car and use it as a donor.

Looks pretty straighforward... Head to a wrecker and pull the fender, headlight, coolant canister assembly and radiator and put it in. A brand new radiator might be worth considering, but used is fine because modern day radiators don't have all the issues the ones of long had. Also Ebay sells replacement bumper covers unpainted for $100-ish and matching paint for $300ish.

The OP clearly said they have enough skill to fix it themselves... If you know how to fix your own car the cost of replacing it is going to be significantly higher than doing the repair.

It’s always taken five min to calibrate. Now it won’t at all.

The body is in terrible shape to begin with. Cosmetics are of no matter to me. But the coolant leaking is the main problem . That and the wheel is no longer straight, could that just be a bent up tie rod or does the frame rail look bent?

This is what I was thinking but that tire is bent inward pretty bad, have t taken the time to see if it’s the frame rail or just a suspension component yet

How would I measure the sensor, or rather where do I hook the multimeter up to? If it’s just the sensor is it still safe to drive provided I keep her filled up?

it calibrated with a little more connection to the aux battery. this particular prius (once owned by the daughter of sir rodney king) has had some strange happenings which i somehow fixed without knowing what i did so it makes me nervous. What kind of preventative stuff can i do to a prius with an unknown ridiculously high milage (already replaced brake actuator)
