I am currently in a 12 volt battery conundrum. I bought a used 2007 Prius and the 12 V Toyota battery is dead.*
Another battery from a Prius I am junking appears to be weak.

I just have no confidence in the standard AGM battery choices. Is anyone using the LiPO batteries that mimic lead acid battery charge characteristics?

Are there any neat ways of integrating a solar panel to help keep the battery happy?

I'm just finding the existing 12 volt battery is this model to be a weak link in an otherwise reliable car. I apologize
if all this is old knowledge but the half dozen search terms I tried got me no good information.

    Cheers.

    * 11.2 volts in the morning. Removing battery it charges up to 14.7V in about 5 minutes. Way to fast...

Yeah there are a bunch of brands of LiPo batteries I use a few in my 12 v power sports equipment along with you also regular AGM batteries in a few others The lipo batteries have been replaced a couple of times under warranty they have the computer chip in them that allows a regular charger or a lithium charger to work with the battery etc etc etc I've had Dakota and the couple of others so I'm not sure they're really super ready for prime time the longest one I've had on a piece of equipment so far without having to be replaced or fooled with is about 2 years and everything I own get started gets driven moved run to temperature etc The AGM units are usually on a tender I don't tend the lipo very often It seems to be okay when it's okay

SKS drains battery, best to turn it off.

How often do you drive the Prius? Once a week, couple times a week.

Use a charger/maintainer for the battery.

my first oem lasted 6 1/2 years. my second is 3 1/2 and measures 12.77 in the morning. i think they are fine if treated properly.

there is a long term thread here by someone who put in a 12v lithium. if i can find it, i'll link to it.

not the one i'm looking for, but might be helpful:

Thanks. That is a good thread.

I drive the car about 6 days a week. About twenty miles one way.

My skittishness about AGM batteries is based on a history. First battery on a new 2007 lasted about seven years. Second maybe
    4. Third about the same. The latest is iffy at a year. I'd be happy if the number stayed steady but the trend is downward.

I'll be changing batteries more than oil at this rate... :)

I've thought about building up a real time monitor to get some idea of what is going on. Does anyone have a number on the 12V battery typical maximum discharge current?

    Cheers.

the only issue is when the car is off. around 20 milliamps iirc.

a simple test is to measure voltage drop overnight with battery connected to car, and with battery disconnected.
when the car is ready, the invertor supplies varying power based on the battery level. around 12.5 to 14.5 or so.

    bisco,

Thanks. I've checked that in the past. I plan to check it again.

The reason I asked about the maximum draw is that I was thinking about putting in a current monitoring shunt in series with the battery so I can do some monitoring to see if the charge current is reasonable.

The situation at this point is that the battery checks OK using two tests.

    1) the high beams on for 5 minutes and then waiting for the voltage to stabilize shows that the battery voltage drops about 0.1 volt from 12.5 to 12.4V. I found this test on the forums here and it seemed like a reasonable idea.

    2) I borrowed a load check unit from a friend. 100amps. And according to the meter the battery is OK.

But when I get in the car after a night sitting the battery voltage is about 11.5 volts.

    Cheers.

yes, that really sounds like too much quiescent draw

Do you have additions in this car to the electrical system ham radio gear inverter for electrical any of that kind of stuff?? Or is this just the static car doing this just because. because I'm going to tell you my '09 is a service vehicle The area where the spare tire goes the spare tire has been out for years there's tools and basic crap back there bags are screws just all kinds of maintenance nightmare junk The battery that's usually covered by the little wing with the carpet on it and all that stuff not even back there I have access to my battery all the time so do tools and screws and all kinds of nonsense and then the three or so maybe 4 years I've been driving this car as a service vehicle here in North Carolina with the four seasons I haven't been able to kill the 12 volt yet I have the skinny AGM gold's I don't even know who it's made by AAA or somebody nothing special interstate probably and they do extremely well even with metal tools flying across the battery terminal sometimes they don't step stop there they just fly across and hit and bounce off and whatever careless nonsense has not shorted a battery caused any problems back there whatsoever. I finally did hear the HV battery fan come on the other day to the point where I could hear it's the first time in 3 years other than when the battery was dead and it was running all the time full tilt this was while driving the car medium speed etc.

I use Mighty Max 35Ah SLA 12 v bats. Very simple to modify the car side connections, and the bats are cheap on Amazon.

    Tombukt2,

I wish I had your battery :) The car is stock, no added loads.

    John,

That is a great price. I am very interested in this route.

For now I'm going to run a charger on the thing. Hopefully I won't drive off an forget.
When things get a bit more stable (me that is) I'll decide whta path to take.

    Cheers.

Hi Alan, When things slow down for you please feel free to get back to me and I'll give you all the info/experience I have regarding Mighty Max bats.
