The Car Care Nut master dealer mechanic thought they were great until he got his own shop. Dealers and owners that subscribe to Consumer Reports don't routinely see high mile Prii. The first 150k is not too bad. Independents and glutens for punishment do you see them. I don't know of another Toyota model that has created a cottage industry specializing in head gaskets.

Whilst I cannot profess to understand the science behind it- is there any correlation potentially with the octane rating for US fuel and HG failures? UK owner here- 119000 miles and owned my gen 3 for 7 years. Plenty of high mileage gen 3s in the UK, and I very much doubt they will have had anything other than routine maintenance. I've never seen any evidence of HG failures other than US based vehicles?

Sounds to me like the OEM head gasket just isn't up to the task in the long run for the kind of heat cycling these engines can go through, and without nearly ideal conditions being kept (clean EGR, good water pump, coolant changes, OCI, non-aggressive driving) will fail in due time. HGs that have not failed at high mileage likely had a combination of more ideal factors being met.

Where's your evidence that the cars they listed aren't even worse? They're showing typical mileages at failure lower than we see on Prii here.
