Featured Dead: Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV

    From what I understand the problem has been resolved, both for affected Bolts (if you took it in for the recall) and for later Bolts.

    Not just Chevy .... it was the battery manufacturer. Our Plugin Pacifica was on recall due to fire risk / a dozen or so fires from the same battery manufacturer.

    The same with those that I have known, they have loved their Bolts.

    The fires weren't all that common, but enough to ruin the Bolt's image in the minds of those that don't own one.

    The 50 kW charging rate kills the Bolt for me. We had a BMW i3-REx with a similar, 50 kW charging limit:
    • Extra hour and $24 to drive to Nashville.
    • Faster for $6 gas to return using the Range Extender.
    Our Tesla originally had a peak rate of 100 kW which was barely tolerable for cross country. After an Over The Air update, it has a 178 kW peak which really speeds up cross country travel.

    While long charging times can be a pain, if that's the most important thing to me I'll stick with gas and diesel.

    When I had the Leaf I did a 400 mile round trip with no Level 3 charging at all and a 700 mile round trip with Level 3 charging only at the destination I was staying at and so didn't really benefit from it. Both of these trips covered areas also necessitating level 1 charging. In my opinion taking longer on those long trips is a trade off I'm willing to accept, as long as everything else seems like it will work out well and the price is right.

    Tesla does do the best at charging speeds. A base Model 3 starts at $39,990 which is still a bit out of my reach. If I could get an EV for half that I wouldn't care if it only came with up to 50 kW charging personally, as long as it had about 250 miles range or better.

    The Chevy Equinox EV should charge at 70 miles per 10 minutes, according to their site. I'm not sure how that compares to a Tesla, but that's got to be pretty close. And for $10,000 less that sounds like a much better deal to me.

    The Ultium EVs have peak charge rates in the 150 to 190 kW range. Guessing it depends on what exactly the battery is.

    An average charge rate would be more useful. Heard of an EV with a 100kW peak taking as long as a Bolt during a session. That's probably harder to publish with the variables involved.

    IIRC - the 800V charging architecture used by the likes of Porsche Audi Kia Hundai is top of the food chain, no?
    That translates out to about 350kW's .... which on a 300 mi range kia - would put you back on the road in 18 minutes going charging to just 80%. Hardly enough time to eat & pee on those long drives .
    Volvo,GM & stellatis have committed to changing over sometime down the road.

    My Tesla has a triangular shaped, charging curve like the blue line:

    The fastest way to travel is to arrive at the lowest State Of Charge (SOC) so you get the maximum charge rate. Let the car charge until you have enough to reach the next SuperCharger with some reserve. Disconnect and drive on.

    I wouldn't rule used EVs out. They all have an 8 year, 100,000 warranty on the battery. There's also a $4k used EV tax credit on 2+ year old, 1 owner, but the income limit is lower than the new EV tax credit.

    Yep, good ole GM....whenever they have a big decision they seem to make the OPPOSITE of what makes sense!

    But we know why they are discontinuing the Bolt and Volt...$$$$ Lots more profit with a $70,000 Yukon or $80,000 Sierra!!!

    Looks like I'll be driving 'gassers' for a while longer.......
    I did a quick look at the Junior High school kids over at C&D and they say that this is a list of the cheapest BEVs in 2023.

    How many of them qualify for the government kickbacks?
    What will this list look like next year with $7500 of additional tax payer funded inflation tacked onto the sticker? ;)

    the vdumb is probably the best deal because they get the full 7.5k

    but model 3 isn't much more and tesla keeps dropping prices.

    Numbers 1,2, and 7 can get a tax credit. Next year the dealership might play games. I don't think everyone will qualify for the POS rebate. You still need to meet all the tax requirements. It's just that you can get it right away rather than waiting until after filing your taxes.
