The 1.5L used in the later Prius C is pretty much the same engine, as far as design goes. Toyota recommends 0w-20 in this engine.

I think 5W-30 was suggested, outside of the rest of the world, because the US was not as "keen" on 0W-20 when it 1st came out when the Gen2 was released in 2004. It was in Japan and other markets.

The rings on this engine sludge up easily, because they carbon up around the oil control rings due to stopping and starting so much. Here is stuff I found out:

    1. Changing the engine oil religiously is critical. They sell 10-20k mile oil now, but if your car manual still says "Every 5,000 miles", FOLLOW IT.

    2. Using oils with more detergent will keep the rings from sludging up as easily. I also think using the oil Toyota later recommends SHOULD help prevent this, as a thinner oil will circulate easier through the drain back holes in the piston. I can't find the link, but Toyota did later come out and said it was ok in the North American markets to use 0w-20 in the Prius engine. Some good oils to use are Amsoil (but pricey), Penzoil and Mobil 1.

    3. Carbon build up occurs more in hybrid engines due to the engine constantly stopping and starting. While this is a thing of the past, sort of..in non-hybrid engines, it's why a Prius engine will look dirtier inside at 100k miles than the same 1.5 engine in a Yaris or Scion XB.

    4. While I would normally NOT suggest a fuel injector cleaner in a modern engine, I do think using a high quality one with PEA should help keep the carbon to a minimum. Because you are dealing with more carbon than regular non-hybrid engines.

    5. I would not recommend using thicker oils as some hear recommenced. Your oil cushion or clearance on the bearings is a fraction of what an engine from the 70's or 80's like a small block chevy had.

I did not know the 1NZ to have these issues . I've generally run the five weight 30 has called for on the oil cap of this engine mine are 05 and 09 oil caps state 5 30. I've used 0 30 and 0 40 import car oil plenty. I've never noticed any sludge or any buildup actually at all when I look down in my oil fill hole and it's all nice and silvery and a little bit oily vapor colored a very light brown if you will and I'm doing and have been doing on both of these engines 10,000 mi oil changes their whole lives My 09 is it 350,000 plus and uses I don't know about a quart maybe two in an oil change cycle now and that's running the engine pretty mildly to heavy situations. I don't feel that is bad or anything at this mileage and will continue on heading towards 666 The oil consumption I can do nothing about it was doing this when I got the car My '05 was a little better but then electrically that went to hell and I just left it I didn't even try to fix it It was too far gone had some other damage to the body etc. Oil wise everything seems good wesr wise is similar. I want to try a C I would imagine new spins on the one NZ should be good.

The sludging/carbon I am referring to is only on the rings and combustion areas.

I would agree that changing at 5k is a great idea. Mine has always been changed at 5k intervals and burns very little oil at 271,000 miles. I notice that for the first 3000-3500 miles after an oil change, it burns almost nothing. After 3500, I add maybe 1/4-1/2 a quart- and this mainly if I take it on a long road trip. I could just be lucky on this, or it’s the full synthetic 5k oil changes.

Add MARVEL MISTERY OIL to engine oil and the fuel tank once in a while.

I have heard good things about Marvel Mystery Oil, is it a cleaner additive? What exactly does it help in doing? On a chemistry level? Assist in breaking down carbon buildup on rings and/or pistons/cylinder walls?

    Or penny wise, pound foolish?

I did have to give myself a talk this spring. For Canadian 3rd gen, the maintenance interval for oil/filter change is 8000 kms (5000 miles) or 6 months, whichever comes first. I've been dutifully changing the oil on our '10 every mid-April and mid-October, since we never reach 8k kms first any more. Anyway, after this spring's oil change I entered the date/kms in the log, and saw it'd been something like 1500 kms since the previous fall oil change. Think I'm going to stick to yearly from now on.

True, but at $23 for 5 quarts I can live with that. I typically go 5k/1 year oci…..since I own 7 cars there’s always 1 or 2 that I put 5,000 miles or less in that time period. 5 of my cars all use 5w-30 so I just buy several jugs at a time and use it among those 5.

That’s where having synthetic is worth it to me, once a year intervals on the lesser driven cars. I’m also aware that owning 7 cars isn’t too smart either lol, but after having paid off the house several years ago, I felt it was that time in my life to start enjoying things a bit (after living tight fisted for many years) so I’ve bought more (paid for) cars.

Also..most people think oil turned black from being "dirty". Oil turns black when exposed to heat. Even once.

If you really want to evaluate oil change frequency get some lab info on oil at 5k, 7.5k and 10k miles. I did on our pickup, an 04 silverado with 170K miles and towing at 80% of max. Turned out at 6K the oil was still good and the motor is in great shape. Still doing changes at 5K, this puppy works hard and when it is spinning close to 5000 on hills I worry less. But by all means get a lab analysis on your car.
