The first thing I did when I got Priapus home was figure out how to load the CDs. The second, of course, was to load the CDs.

This morning I switched to Linkin Park's Meteora and . . . nothing. It wouldn't play. I cycled through all the CDs and they all played perfectly. That's when I remembered that Meteora is an "extended CD", I think that's what they are called.

I'm not a musicphyle, but believe it works like this:
When I put Meteora into my computer's CD drive, it recognizes that there is computer data in addition to music files. I think it's like screen savers, concert information, desktop wallpaper, etc. When I put the CD into my living room stereo, it's not smart enough to read the data and simply starts playing the music files.

Has anyone had problems with Extended CDs playing in their Prius?

I have the "Meteora" cd in my Prius right now, I listen to it all the time. I have had no trouble with any Enhanced CD's. Most new CD's sold today seem to be enhanced. I know me telling you that it works for me doesn't really help. But at least you know that it is capable of playing "Meteora".

I know that there are some scratches on the CD. When it first came out, it was in and out of the case quite a bit. One of those with the zipper and I think it left some marks. But I've never had a problem with it before so I assumed the Cd was fine.

Now granted, I wouldn't be complaining if the enhanced info came up on the display. Man that would ROCK!

The CD could be just fine after a little bit of cleaning. Also, does it not play even if you eject it and insert it again? I had a couple of bad moments with two of my CDs when test driving the Prius. Both of the CDs were brand new - no dirt, no scratches, no copy-protection, not enhanced CDs - but sometimes they played, sometimes not. The player did twist and turn the disc for a while but nothing happened. Eject and re-insert and the CD plays. No logic.

I know it may sound like an anomalistical* thing to do, but if your chosen method of cleaning the CD did not fix the problem, try licking it with your tongue straight from the center to the edge. You may want to get that sweater off your tongue first! This method can fix some (not all) scratches. Some CD players will ignore some scratches while other players will throw a hissy-fit.

    A most perspicacious observation.

Maybe he should have Nina lick it instead. :)

I asked Nina if she wanted to give that a try, Bruce, but instead she said, "you dork, you've got the DVD "The Making of Meteora" not the actual Album." For a four-year-old cat, she's pretty bright. For a 34-year-old guy, I'm not. :-(

Have made the switch and all is good and right in the world.

P.S. Nina insisted that the only way she would ever lick a CD is if I rubbed some gravy on it.
