I put the car in gear, held the brake to charge the hybrid battery before removal.

POP. The car lurched and lost drive.

    * Now there is a nasty metal, grinding noise from the transmission.

    * When put into N, the grinding sound was less but still there.

    * When put into D/R. It went into d/ R on the dash... but no movement and Grinding sound.

    * I turned it off.

    * I scanned for DCT error codes.. NONE.

    *Restarts fine.
    * Shifts into each drive position fine.
*When in R or D. stepping on the throttle pedal, the engine starts fine and the grinding noise amplifies with RPM.

    * I also noted that when put into Park. The car rolls freely forward or back.

It feels like the engine/hybrid drive is disconnected from the axels??

    What do I test next.?

The grinding noise is a similar noise to when a chain in a 4x4 transfer case breaks..

See if one of the axles popped out of transmission or the cardan joint broke.

That is a good thing. Have you checked the transmission fluid? Your electric parking brake is clearly not working. Sounds like the transmission is between gears. CPS still attached? Not disconnected?

Here's the Maintenance manual section for the transaxle. Good Luck.

Prius does not have a conventional auto transmission so no gears to get stuck in between.

    1. All electronics are working.. gear selection, ICE starting
    2. Trans fluid level good
    3. Trans cooling level good.
    4. No dtc codes/
    5. Just no moving when in R or D.
    6. Grinding sound in all gears and N and Park.

The Chain is in the top side of the case.
Does anyone know IF you can see the chain from any fill hole or plate.?
It can not be see from bottom fill hole..

I'm not sure that the chain is your problem. You say the car can be rolled if it's shifted to park. The parking pawl actuator looks to engage a gear on the countershaft driven gear, which meshes with the differential. Something between that and the wheels is broken.

Really, the practical route is to confirm that the axle shafts are intact to the trans. If so then it's time for a used trans.

Good info... How do I test the axles?
    1. I jacked up the car. spun both wheels. Each causes the opposite wheel to spin the opposite direction. pin the other wheel. the other stops..

    Mystery repair.
    1. Dropped trans fluid - replaced
    2. Dropped trans coolant - replaced
    3. Car on jack stands.. rolled wheel many direction.
    4. Shifted into all gears and rolled wheels.
    5. Put in park, rolled wheels.. Heard a CLICK. and the park brake set.
    6. Started car and now it will go in gear.
    7. Test drove- now it works??

    Happy I am .
