Real World MPG for 2023 Corolla Hybrid

    Posting this purposely in the Gen 5 Prius chat since a bunch of people try to make a decision between paying more for the new Prius and likely having to wait, or buying the current Corolla Hybrid.

    I bought a 2023 LE with aluminum wheels about 4 months ago and put over 9,000 miles on it. Here my real world numbers:

    - Driving like a maniac with the pedal to the flood most of the time, 85% city / 15% highway: 42 MPG

    - Driving normal, 85% city / 15% highway: 52 MPG

    - Driving as cautiously as possible, staying in EV mode as much as possible, 85% city / 15% highway: 66 MPG


    So if you want good MPG for the most part, you can save a lot of money by getting the new Corolla Hybrid.

    That's all I do with this car, so I'm not entirely sure. When I reset the MPG counter the last time, I had to go onto the highway for a longer stretch. I could maintain 64 MPG at 59 mph with the help of some hypermiling. Going 70, I assume it will drop to high 50s, going 80 mid 50s.

    that's pretty darn good compared to the epa. one of our members @daisy555 cross shopping the corrola and prius was concerned about highway mpg.

    Think they were looking at the Corolla Cross. Boxy SUV hurts at higher speeds.
    If looking for fuel economy, there is a good selection beyond Toyota.

    Another interesting factor I have found is the fact that the ECU is learning your driving pattern and adjusts accordingly.

    When I was driving really aggressively for several weeks. I wasn't able to get back to good MPG numbers at all for about 2 weeks.

    I was down to 42 MPG, and going all slow got me to only 44.5.

    Only after about 2 weeks the computer adjusted towards my most current driving style by changing throttle response, AF ratio, RPM range and when it goes into EV mode.

    This adaptive learning can also be reset with a proper service computer on OBD2.

    If you want the best possible economy out of these hybrids, don't confuse the computer with erratic behavior. Never going WOT (wide open throttle), and pretending that there is an egg under your pedal at all times, will send a clear signal to the ECM.

    I’m a potter and gardener. I’ve had a hatchback for over 20 years and can’t imagine life without one. : } This obviously doesn’t mean I couldn’t use a compact SUV.

    For a while I tried to get "everything" done with just one vehicle. Eventually I gave up on that compromise and got the following:

    1. For good gas mileage and getting from A to B: Toyota Corolla Hybrid

    2. For transporting large items in the dry (holds a stack of 4 by 8 feet plywood) and camping: Dodge Grand Caravan

    3. For transporting and trailering large or heavy objects: Single Cab, Long Bed, RAM 1500 Pickup with the V8 HEMI and 4WD

    4. For fun and going fast: Heavily modified Corvette C7

    I unfortunately don’t have the financial freedom to buy a vehicle for every need. If I did, I’d probably be spending it in other ways.

    mrs b uses her hycam for gardening, works out pretty well. she has used my prius, but doesn't see any benefit

    Trunks can work, but it comes down to specifics. Wife would put bags of mulch and flats of plants into the trunk of the old Lincoln Mark VII, but plants in big pots start getting tricky.

    The Corolla's trunk is about a small suitcase smaller than the Camry's. The Prius XLE is two of those suitcases bigger than the Camry.

    idk, the new prius hatch looks awfully small to me. i don't care about cubic feet, i care more about length x width.
    but i do like my hatch as well, especially the versatility of the fold down seats

    Yes, the entry to the hatch looks like the width of a trunk. They obviously didn’t have me involved in the decision making process. : / I called Toyota and they said they don’t take/register consumer feedback regarding design issues for future modifications. Oh well…

    If I had my 2007 Prius back I would be perfectly happy with it. I went down a long and expensive road with cars after daughter took possession. Never really satisfied and always had the car bug. Now the Prime is it for life barring accident, starting to have the same feeling like the 07. The 07 was supposed to be used till 2027 when I bought it, that was the goal. It never even needed an alignment. The 2020 Prime is to go to 2040, that’s the new goal.
    Not knocking the le and xle, but I am enjoying the limited’s features over my last 2020 le. The parking sonar, park assist, blind spot, HUD, and all that, and I like the big screen, which I thought I wouldn’t like.

    If I could go back in time, I would be saying yes to the 2022 XLE that was pulled from allocation for me. I know it’s not logical but I keep trying to convince myself everything happens for a reason. I love my 2009 except for its lack of power and updated safety features.

    if i had a wayback machine, i'd pick up a new prime for $18,000. when no one wanted them, and sell today for 30k
