9854-mile used oil analysis, oil change thoughts

    I have changed the oil on our 2012 Prius every 10000 miles with Mobil1 0W20 and genuine Toyota filters. It has never used any oil and the lifetime mpg is 55.1. I see advice on priuschat to change the oil every 5000 miles, so I did a used oil analysis at 172657 miles after 9854 miles of use, see attached.

    Others may have different usage and experience, so I am not offering advice. But for me and my Prius, every 10000 miles looks fine.

    Any chance you can change the oil again in only 5K miles and get the oil tested again?

    It's best to compare the data between the two change intervals with the same vehicle driven under the same conditions...

    My hunch has always been that 7500 mile change intervals is best but have never been able to study the data... Anyone got links?

    You can get good engine oil analysis but without egr cleaning, you can get a blown head.

    At 150000 miles, I cleaned the intake manifold egr tubes and egr cooler. The intake had only light carbon buildup and #1 was not any worse than the others. The egr cooler buildup was impeding flow, but was not blocked. I posted these results EGR & Intake Manifold Clean Results | Page 26 | PriusChat

    I was going to change my oil change interval to 5000 miles from 10,000, but that was based on opinions from some Prius Chatters with no data.

    An oil analysis will not show you carbon build up on the piston rings and drain holes. I did 10k oil changes at the dealer for the first 140k on my car. Then switched to 5k but bringing my own oil and filter to my trusted mechanic. I’m at 180k now with basically no oil consumption. I think if you wanted to have extended OCI then 7,500 would be a safer option. Just my thoughts.

    I've never quite understood the relevance of these test although I do appreciate seeing them OP. I know that TBN correlates to engine wear and varnish accumulation, but I've seen the oil burner motors torn apart and they really had no wear or varnish accumulation at all on the bottom end or really at all on the mechanicals inside the motor. Even the bearings always looked new. It was really just the piston scraper rings were completely clogged with carbon and sludge. OP if we are just going off of TBN numbers to leave in oil, diesel oils have much higher TBN numbers to start with so theoretically you could do much longer OI's with diesel oil if you are only worried about the TBN number.
    In my head though I know oil is pretty cheap so I just do 5k and move on.
    200,000 miles / 5,000 changes = 40 changes = $998.8
    200,000 miles / 10,000 changes = 20 changes = $499.4
    Supertech 0w-20 5 quart = 19.98
    Everybody has different sales tax so i will just use 6%.
    19.98*1.06= 21.18/5qt = 4.24qt * 4.4qt oil change = $18.64
    Toyota 04152-YZZA6 from dealer = 5.97*1.06 = $6.33
    Oil change = $24.97
    So given the average driver goes about 15k a year at around 13 years to hit 200k, thats about an extra $38 a year to meet the severe service interval or about $500 over 13 years. The risk of saving that is that if the rings finally clog at 200k the engine replacement will be $7500 for most non diy folks. In probably a $5000 car.
    I would be interested in how an oil test can detect our main problem. Contamination of oil scraper rings. I think these oil interval test are more relevant with the non modern engines with the old rings though as they never really had piston ring issues. ie: the old v8 and v6 toyotas.

    I was at this crossroads and decided to get the used oil analysis. It's hard data from my vehicle. It's $45 with TBN from Blackstone, so a bit more than one do-it-yourself oil and filter change, but better in the long run if the analysis says 10000-mile changes are fine.

    That's all highway. Motor is always hot so gas and moisture have no opportunity to condense in the motor oil. These condensates are what break down motor oil. I'd change it at 6 months next time.

    How does more frequent oil change affect carbon buildup? Carbon comes from the combustion of gasoline mostly and maybe a tiny amount from oil that gets past the piston rings.

    He never said not to clean the EGR. He said don’t go crazy cleaning the cooler since it will get carbon build up quickly again. If you watched the whole video he blasts out a lot of carbon of of the cooler with compressed air but didn’t bother getting it shiny clean.

    He's also a dealer tech so he can't really dive into customer cars for hours and hours to clean the egr cooler either. Too expensive and not many customers will allow. Also, Toyota says to never clean anything for the most part. They are a strict replacement only policy to avoid redoing jobs and wasting dealer time.
    Carbon also results from long oil intervals as the oil gets hot from exposure to high heat and breaks down into carbon as well. The insolubles % accounts for the solids which are typically comprised of carbon, dirt, a bit of all of it.

    The dude in the video pretty much said to follow Toyota's recommendations (10K miles but 5K miles for the conditions specified). but then goes on to say 5000 miles. He even does 2-3K miles. 24 minutes when he could said it all in less than 10. Ugh. But, I think for piece of mind I'm going to 5K miles especially considering my Prius has the low tension oil rings.
