@exstudent yes am currently looking at different cars but was not planning to. I purchased the prius 18 months ago for 5000 USD en a refurbishment for 500 after that (with 250.000 km at that time) :-( The (prius) cars are quite expensive where I live and was planning to use it longer. A full battery replacement is also very expensive at Toyota, I looked at this before I did the refurbish. If I remember correctly it was between 2500 and 3000 usd.

270,000km = 167,700miles, there would still be a lot of life left. Other parts may wear out (brakes, suspension components, bearings, AC), but this would be expected on a vehicle that is kept for many years/miles.

$2500 dealer installed would actually be very good.

If you search "new oem toyota parts" you might be able to find online (assumed to be) Toyota dealers, selling the HV Battery.
new oem toyota parts europe - Google Search

These two sites, helpful to plug in your VIN

But, since you don't seem to be able to DIY, at least something like this, it is probably best to look into a replacement.

You did nof mention what year model. Prius fitted with Lithium Ion battery will usually do that when they are about to go bad soon.
I own "PriusTec" in Houston and specializes on hybrid.
You did not mention what year model. Anyways some 2nd&3rd generation prius are fitted with upgraded batteries. Usually LifePo4 is used for the Upgrade, and those battery acg like that when getting close to the end of their life. Although those batteries are suppose to last a long time they are not made for Prius so they usually have a lifespan of only 31/2 years. If the BMS were reprogrammed for LifePo4 it has potential to last 30 years!! If you bought your Prius used it may be fitted with those batteries. NiMH usually do not behave like that. If they do it is usually accompanied or followed by orange trianglel.
