Mendel is more or less an echo stickler. He's mad that people want to disable the egr and pollute the environment. He is speaking on something he doesn't fully understand. I'm up here with 220k on an egr delete vehicle, 2 years of egr delete running fine getting high 50s average year round. Have a couple other folks in real life on egr deletes as well for 2 years now. Everyone is getting along fine. Probably saved these people thousands of dollars collectively so far.
Mendel has 60k and hasn't even gotten to the point where he would have experienced these issues. Mendel, quit telling folks clogging the egr system is the same as an egr delete. It is not. The egr main failure point is the uneven clogging of the passageways in the intake manifold which the car cannot adjust to.
This reminds me of my neighbor telling me to hand pick weeds instead of just using weed and feed every spring because he doesn't approve of it. I'll say he's a hard worker out there hand picking weeds every day for a month instead of taking 20 minutes to spread some weed and feed lol

    Hi Paladain,
Not sure if I missed it in the thread but could you provide details of how exactly one deletes EGR - tools and parts please?
    Thanks

I think Mendel's position is that a functional EGR system is important for long head gasket life. I don't remember him ever saying anything about air pollution, although it would have an effect on that.

This is just a WAG on everyone's ideas.
How is it explained that Brazilian Pri don't mess with an EGR system.

I believe the theory is an uneven clogging of the small EGR passages in the intake manifold makes for uneven combustion pressures in certain cylinders and this plays hell with the HG. Just a common theory around here.

By deleting the EGR there can be no uneven flow. Just an other theory, but this one makes perfect sense, until we hear evidence to the contrary,

You can delete it by unplugging the electrical connector on the EGR valve, or by physically blocking EGR with a barrier. The effects will NOT be the same for both methods, because only in the former case can the engine control programming adjust ignition timing and other variables to compensate.

If you block the EGR another CEL will be set for no flow and the computer will compensate for that too.

I was sold on keeping the EGR system and intake passages clean and unplugged when I heard that Toyota changed the system in 2015 (I think).

Diesels typically last long even though they produce lots of particles and have egr. Valve issues are common (valve stuck) and some cars with lots of miles can get intake blocked. Like so blocked that it does not get enough air to even iddle:) Shops often clean the intake by blowing with nutshells etc. But once the egr valves and intakes are taken care of those diesel cars can have lots of miles ahead. The ”fine grit” carbon cr*p going to cylinders does not hurt so much as one might think, sand and such is of course another thing. I noticed in our Prius that intake ports and valves were surprisingly clean (i could even see bare metal surfaces) even though 140kmiles on the clock and oil consumption is 0.4ltr-0.8ltr depending on driving conditions. Oil consumption go up in highway but in those conditions egr is closed. And high quality oil produce less ash and carbon.

The Prius does regurgitate its own puke especially the generation 3 design that's how I look at it. Although that puke the stuff that's getting thrown back in the engine is mentioned above is quite small particulate matter that normal combustion will generally take care of It adds a little more soot and ash and whatnot to the exhaust and sometimes parts of the intake oh well I mean all this discussion we have about this we do realize that these vehicles are failing right around 200,000 miles I thinking automobileia that's not looked upon as too bad now it wasn't too many years ago 100,000 mi was one of vehicle was retired put out the pasture and set out in the desert. So we've double that. Some people are even going much more miles than that before a failure occurs from this stuff. Would I replace the head gasket if I was you I have no idea I don't know what your situation is Do you have 16 hours Do you have access to all the tools hoists etc I do and I don't even do this. I change the engine by the time you do all this work get the head shave valves ground needs to be done the heads off. It is cheaper for me to buy a low mileage JDM spec engine that hasn't been touched by anybody here maybe the transmission to match it and drop it in my $300,000 mi vehicle or whatever it is That's very quick to do taking all this stuff apart bending over this car for hours and hours at a time and all that You know if you're 25 years old that may be nothing. You get up to where I am and you don't want to spend a lot of time contorted over a fender they've made these modern things to pull out an engine and transmission is just to uncouple to drive axles about 11 bolts attach a chain and in my case push the button on my electric hoist up it comes push the chassis back leave the engine hanging set it down on a table or stand can be just two by fours or if you have a proper engine stand etc so as you can see the tools to do the job properly are relatively and can be costly so on and so forth so I don't know what your capabilities are where you are. But enjoy yourself and I hope you have good luck with whatever you choose.

But punctuation, clear beginnings and ends of sentences, line breaks, paragraphs are ALL free for the verbal asking.
He could post posts that look and read like normal peoples' posts.
    He could take the time.
I don't have the time to interrupt what he's trying to say.
I feel it's too much to ask,,,,,
I'll start to read and the moment I lose track,,,, I skip to the next post.

I always imagine that Tom is from a third world country after seeing the single sentence marathon post, the name, and profile pic. Then I'm like, "Good job man. You'll figure out your ESL classes one day!"
