This is a question for anyone who has a converted Prius PHEV or anyone who has CAN-View.

I want to know if any one else is seeing this.

When the Prius is in EV only mode and you go for a while but less then two miles, are you seeing "Engine spin" on the CAN-View?

We are seeing that on one conversion and I want to know if anyone else is seeing it too. It has been suggested that the ICE spins to pump the gear oil onto the power split device. If this is the case I am trying to figure out how the Prius knows the PSD needs lubrication? But first I need to figure out is this happening to anyone else. Could you post here if you know anything?

    Thanks

We, in Japan, are playing a game how long one can drive without the engine spinning, usually on downhill.
My best is 26.35 km without engine spinning.
I have my tacho-meter and CAN message display device.

Ken is that at all speed related?

I have not seen it but I will look for it. I updated late because I was out of town.

Let me clarify, this is happening at low speeds about two miles into the EV only mode.

Of course, it was below 42 mph.
My case was between 0 and 60 km/h, average speed was 29 km/h.

OH, I was responding to Dolio.

    Thanks.

Do you have access to accessories for your cars there we just don't have here?

I have an additional question related to CAN-View. I haven't read all the way through the CAN-View downloads thread, so guessed someone here can answer.

I have a 2005 with package #5 (which includes NAV) and wanted to know exactly which items I need to order.

I know it's the CAN-View V3 and that I'll need the relay board for the PHEV conversion (which I wouldn't do for several years, but want the CAN-View now). What other cabling, etc. is needed?

I know that you can email eflier to order, but what is the ordering process after knowing exactly what I want. Can everything be done via email, or can I make a phone call when I get to the state where I actually order.

    Thanks for any info.

I've already replied to Dave's email, (and he has now ordered one) so this is just for the benefit of others reading this thread who might have a similar question. I do everything on my CAN-view hobby project by email, as it typically takes several back-and-forth question-and-answer emails before a customer makes a decision. I also make each one to order. CAN-views are designs aimed at a very small niche market, often in response to new requests, especially on the plug-in conversion interface side, so it can't be handled like a conventional product that is frozen at the point of production, where you just look at an advertisment for a mass-produced product and then click to buy.

Apart from continuing interest in seeing more Prius data displayed, which at present outnumbers requests for relay versions about 3:1, I have seen increasing interest in possible plug-in conversions. I believe that, largely due to the work of www.calcars.org, we are a lot closer now to seeing a complete do-it-yourself kit being offered early next year and I am gratified that CAN-view will be a (small) part of this.

I have my own private 'beef' in that while there is a lot of information about prototype plug-in conversions and how, if you drive real, real, careful, you can get XXX mpg, but its hard to find details on what you can expect from such a conversion if you just get in and drive without any thought to keeping the speed under 32mph, or the throttle under 60% or whatever, just get in and enjoy the Prius drive. And I also can't understand people arguing about cost benefits (or lack of any) for such conversions. Who really bought a Prius to save money?

Once these kits become available, the biggest hurdle will probably be people saying "i'm just going to wait till next year when Toyota will have a fully warrantied plug-in hybrid without any hassles." I think that while Toyota may now have its own Lithium technology working, it will want to wait several years to compile real-world figures for reliability before it unleashes hundreds of thousands of plug-in Prii on the world, with it being responsible for warranty cost for maybe 8 years.

So I may be opening a can of worms here, but in my opinion, don't expect to buy a Toyota plug-in Prius this decade. (Ends posting and waits for howls of outrage)

No outrage from me. It's to be expected. Their approach is at least better than companies like Enron, etc.
They eventually will provide a product that people want. After all, they're doing so now.

Now that "eflier" has implemented some software changes and everybody can see it, if you're in EV mode at low speed, the engine will "spin" for a necessary splash of lubricants when needed.

Have you people lately checked Hybridinterfaces for the last code versions?
