They are different and each have advantages. It is easy to get 3 phase delivered to businesses, but air-conditioning is the only home appliance that could benefit. Europe's system allows runs up to 1 mile versus americas secondaries only being 1/8 as long, which is great if you are in older cities that have trouble retrofiting. North America's system makes it much cheaper for rural electrification. Europe uses higher voltage which allows thinner wires, but at the home level this is slightly less safe.

Tesla and j1772-2009 require 5 pins those 3 and PP and CP for safety and communication. Europe's J1772 type 2 requires 7 pins, once each for the other 2 phases. It is much larger physically than tesla's connector.

Tesla uses those two power pins for ac and dc. Combo plug adds dedicated pins, so 5 for tesla, 7 for CCS-1 (north america), and 9 for CCS-2 (Europe). No extra wires are needed for a charger though, but the plug and socket must be physically much larger.

The single phase goes up to J1772 goes to19.2 KW, which is plenty for L2 (tesla's allows for higher voltage of 277V which is common for industrial customers, so 22 KW). 3 phase can go up to 166 KW. The 2 phase is limited to 80A, with a 100A breaker, 3 phase to 160A. That 19.2 KW charger is fairly easy with 4 awg wire. If you are limited it to that then you can use thinner wire, but you need two more wires, pins, connections. The reason many public L2 are are around 6kw is not because of 3 phase it is because most cars other than tesla's haven't had the hardware to charge much faster.

I agree with you. It is worth knowing about the main types of sockets and everything will be fine: J1772, CCS1, and NACS (tesla)
