If my guess was that my 2004 Prius (currently 200k+ mi.) wouldn't last another 100k miles, and so I decided to install a reusable KN engine air filter that needs cleaning every 75k miles ---

Would be it a moot point be to change my engine air filter again?

Too existential for an honest answer...

Could it be pragmatic as much as it is existential?

Read the k&n box again It talks about Dusty conditions extreme conditions etc talks about checking the filter to make sure it's not completely clogged and it's inpingment process is working That's on some human It's not a drop in and forget until the engine dies type of thing and unless you're Prius is in some poor condition for a generation two hundred thousand miles is well broke in That's about it now I understand you might want to get something else but that's not the car's fault

Be careful, it is extremely easy to over-oil the filtration sponge. This can foul the airflow sensor.

With the age and miles that you have, I would NOT recommend putting any money into it that
isn't absolutely necessary. It might fail tomorrow.

I think that your estimate of the remaining life is probably unrealistic.

I also think that the "reusable" K&N filters are a joke on a street vehicle.

How often do you need to change the stock filters. We're on west coast Canada, albeit not exactly the prairies dust bowl' I changed both engine and cabin air filters for the first time (since purchase new in November of 2010) at:

    Thursday, October 15, 2020
    kms: 88155
    * changed engine oil and filter
    * changed engine and cabin air filters

The engine air filter in particular still looked near-new.

Impingement filters are of no consequence they work just fine You're not supposed to soak the filter in a bucket of oil You lightly spray the red dye oil on the filter till you see pink kind of like matching your inverter jug and then you drop that in the square slot and you leave it alone and about every 35,000 mi or so unless your conditions alter this you should take a look at it You don't have to clean it just look at it see how black it is and how much stuff is collected on the dirt side if need be lightly brush it off drop it back in the square hole and forget about it for a while or not at at 200k you would stop respecting the car seriously there is no way on earth that I could take that kind of advice at 200,000 miles generally speaking unless you have abused that ever living h a l e out of the vehicle that drive line and Prius is just now well broke in seriously every vehicle I own from Toyota on my property as well over $200,000 miles 200,000 mi is young. Unless you've done everything you can to make this not so which some people are very good at.

Having used these in the past I recommend sticking with the standard paper filter. If your car lasts another 100K the cost to buy the filter and oil is more than an inventory of paper ones. And honestly paper works better IMHO.

I think the lot of them now are mostly some type of fiber material a hairy I'm not sure that it's paper anymore I think the brown things maybe that you see made by m a n n that go in the German cars possibly but there's also an option that's an upgraded filter which is not looking like paper but is certainly cheaper than chicken wire and some form of gauze and lots of advertising.

I live in the suburbs, nowhere dusty or windy.

I checked my filter a couple weeks ago; it's not kruft with dirt and gunk, like you'd see on YouTube channels with mechanics dealing with KN cone filters.

In my Prius in Central North Carolina 09 model it takes a long time to get that filter anywhere near where it needs to be to be cleaned close to 50K

"Unrealistic" as in too generous, thinking it might be working for more years

    -or-

"Unrealistic" as in it's gonna die sooner than that.

Yeah, so that I was my thinking. If I had less than 100k left on an old car, then give it something I wouldn't have to worry about changing.

Unless you're in a rust state or something that eats the chassis up your car should make $450k without much a do. Yeah you'll need a battery I'm sure and the brake pump accumulator doodad may fail. The heads up display may flicker stop working become intermittent $150 so fix and those are the big things the rest of it's all breaks and tires and batteries and consumables It's actually a pretty boring car at the end of the day unless you get excited by lights reading codes resetting codes but those things mentioned above are the things that keep most people up at night about these vehicles and they're easy fixes generally speaking

well, you arguably spent money to make your car worse. no benefit and possibly worse than normal paper replacement.

My sentence before that, which you did not quote, said "It might fail tomorrow."
Meaning that I do not think it will last another 100K miles without some major maintenance investments.
