Hopefully it was leaking though the pump. Other wise....
I bought my water pump replacement though a Toyota dealer because of the mixed reviews on Amazon and high risk of counterfeits.

I can make an Amazon account and call it Nippon Denso or NGK etc but it doesn't mean that I work for them. Fleabay is the worst. What do you think all the products for sale there have zero reviews? It's because when they get their first negative review they just create another listing to duplicate the first one and then delete the first listing and they keep going like that. Amazon reviews are fake too. The hire a team of people in a foreign country with a bunch of different email addresses all coming out of the same IP to create positive reviews for them and negative reviews for the competition. That's how Amazon got their start because Amazon did that to their competition. Amazon reviews don't have to be from actual purchasers

A CEO recently said 80% of what consumers buy goes in the trash within a year. Storage facilities will tell you the other 20% is in their storage units LOL

    Hello!

A poster has suggested this site could be a reliable source for the 3rd gen Prius 161A0-29015 water pump.

    https://www.amayama.com/en/part/toyota/161a029015

What caught my attention is that the weight for the different part numbers is slightly different for all of them. The "plain" AISIN pump is the heaviest while the new part number 2915 is the lightest. I have contacted their customer support section and asked if they had any info related to MTBF.

I simply want to have one handy, my 14 C one is having issues, with less than 50K on it. Any insights on which pump should last longer? Suggestions?

It looks like the oem partwhich is the best. You might also replace the thermostat which should be on the other side of the pump housing since you will have drained the coolant and it is an inexpensive part and easy to replace.

    Hello!

I do agree, I guess-estimate that the updated part number should have an improvement. We definitely need to track what was bought and how long it lasted. This thread seems to be the closest conversation to that end.
Their customer support replied back and said "any additional information we have is already listed"
I have the thermostat already, Instead of going with Aisin, went with TAMA, also Japanese, PART # WHTF-82

I appreciate your response, THANK YOU!

    Hello!

I am trying to have a water pump in stock for a 14 C one just in case, and this website https://www.autodoc.co.uk/spares-search?keyword=161A029015 gave a list of 40+ pump manufacturers.

Perusing noticed that some pumps cross referenced a part number for Honda: 192005K0A01

NISSENS 831074 is the only pump that according to rockauto, can can service any of these part numbers: 161A029015, 161A039015 or 192005K0A01. What caught my attention is the weight of the NISSENS pump: 3.17Kg, please see the website:

    https://customerportal.nissens.com/Product/SimpleProduct?nissensNo=831074

The pump housing is all metal, the impeller seems to be made out of plastic. A basic dimensional diagram is also given at the NISSENS portal. Could that be a good pump that fits? Finding dimensional data has proven to be difficult lol.

RockAuto also lists US MOTOR WORKS US8185 as a replacement choice for 192005K0A01, in Amazon a seller offers a 10 year warranty for that pump.

Typing up 161A029015 in the Amayama website also brings into play Daihatsu as another manufacturer.

Any suggestions or comments are more than welcomed.
