    Hi Guys!

I'm Sandor from Europe and planning to buy either a Prius 4 (simple hybrid) or a C-HR hybrid. I checked a lot of videos and articles but I still cannot really decide between these two. I drove both, I like both and both have pros and cons. Can anyone who has experience in the topics below provide some additional feedback or share the experience please? Or maybe help me to decide? Much appriciated!
Just to mention, currently I own a 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid.

Here are my collected list, highlighted the most important things.

    prius4:
    • pro: huge trunk (500+ liter)
    • pro: good view sitting on the back seats
    • pro: inside it's much more like a spaceship which I really like
    • pro: led lights in almost every model I found
    • con: not all model has seat and steering wheel heats
    • con: a bit smaller ground clearance than the chr
    • con: outside it looks like a soap, not a car. The more I see it, the more I like it interestingly though
    ch-r
    • pro: looks awesome
    • pro: like 99% has steering wheel and front seat heats
    • pro: better ground clearance, so it suits more for visiting our outskirt field plus I'm a tiny bit above the rest of the cars
    • pro: has auto hold by default
    • con: small trunk
    • con: limited view at the back
    • con: only 2020+ models have led lights (or some older with extra led pack), but those are much expensive
It's like equal. I really like the prius's huge boot size, but I have some fears I'll be limited at some points when visiting our field. These are the roads for eg. we typically need to visit (sorry could not paste a link), in google maps, search for "1173 Budapest, Kutyaközpont Kutyaiskola Kutyapanzió, Összekötő Street"

With the Niro, taking care of the bumps it's not a problem, but I have to watch the road of course every time if there is a new small hole or something.

    Thank you everyone!

Forgot to add (cannot edit somewhy anymore): I travel 60% alone, the rest with my family (wife and a 7 years old). Occasionally with 2 more (sister and an another 12 years old).

I have a Prius 4 and I like it a lot more than the C-HR - both optically and technically. The P4 has the newer (4th gen) HSD system and is trimmed for maximal fuel efficiency. The C-HR is more mainstream and suits the "global desire" for having an SUV better. The P4 is extremely spacious and as you say, the trunk is fantastic. The C-HR is more like a crushed cola can in my view ;-) Some P4s can develop a leak in the EHR system. Some C-HRs can develop inverter failure. However, both problems seem rare and both cars are in general very reliable.

So, I would say, definitely go for the P4, BUT (!!!) ground clearance can be a big problem (with just about 120mm it is comparable to a 911!). Especially "offroad" trips can be a problematic to impossible without damaging the underneath of the car. 120mm ground clearance is really not a lot! So if these trips with bumpy roads are done regularly, I would go for the C-HR. If it is only a few times a year, the P4 can also do it if you are cautious. The key to success on offroad roads is to never drive through the deepenings (the middle bump will instantly damage your car) but instead drive "shifted" on one side of the road (so that you actually drive on the bumps and not in the deepenings between them).

I don't know. I went to our field once with a 2015ish vw passat, there was one place where I felt the ground, but the angle was as bad as possible, plus I can fix it, because it was the entry of the field. I'm not really sure if the prius has lower GC than this passat.

The 2015 Passat B8 has a ground clearance of 145mm according to google - which is an impressing 25mm more than the P4.

The mileage depends on the use. I general, the P4 takes at about 1 liter less gas per 100km (P4 has about 4.5 liters/100km, the C-HR has some 5.5 liter or so). However, if you drive a lot on highways at high speed, the P4 remains economic (due to its fantastic cw value) but the C-HR starts to drink. This holds true up to about 130km/h. After that, both cars will rapidly increase fuel consumption.

The US never got the hybrid C-HR, so responses about it here will likely be limited. Appearance alone says the C-HR is less of a family car than the Prius. The back seat looks smaller.

The Passat is 138mm according to this, but there can be regional differences.

Still higher than the Prius, but it looks like the Niro bests everyone mentioned here.

I know modifying a car can be more trouble in Europe, but lifting the Prius is an option. I recall there being a thread just about that for the gen4. Even getting tires with slightly larger diameters might be enough. This will reduce efficiency, though mostly at highway speeds.

Forgot to add about the lights. LEDs are nicer, but LED replacements that plug into the halogen lamp are readily available here. I was satisfied with the ones I put in a 2016 Camry.

Yeah, these things you mention the thoughts I had too. I mean I know it's a 100% 1st world problem, no doubt.

There are people with various cars out there. I always see people driving at my field with regural cars and I'm sure they don't have that much stress.

Also, I could drive 2 days ago a p4 for a longer ride. Man... the chr is reeeally good, but the prius is an another level. I'm not sure how to convince myself not to buy it and then regret at the first visit the field.

Unfortunately I cannot rent one to try it out, because I found none :/

The Niro beats all in that sense, true, but the double clutch gearbox way more shitty and noisy.

Yes, you are exactly right: the P4 is by no means comparable to the C-HR. Apart from the ground clearance, nothing favors the C-HR.

Where do you live? Is there really no single P4 available for rent in your country? Could you rent it in a neighboring country and then drive to your field? It may be expensive but everything is better than to spend thousands for a C-HR you don't really want or for a P4 which then is not able to traverse the field...

PS: If you should end up with the C-HR, do NOT get one without full-led lights. The halogen bulbs are really bad. Here in Switzerland, however, all the P4s have full-led lights even in the most basic versions. These are great lights, especially if you drive a lot at night (like me).

I tried, p4 is not that popular here unfortunately. I ended up buying a facelift chr with almost all the extras (jbl and parking assist missing). Both car are really good, but looks like p4 is not for bumpy roads :/
